Matthew 20:25-29  Mark 10:42-45
The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #352-103021

25  But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
26  But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
27  And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
28  Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
29  And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.
Matthew 20:25-29

42  But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
43  But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among
you, shall be your minister:
44  And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
45  For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Mark 10:42-45

When the rest of the disciples heard that John and James had gone to Jesus with their mother to ask special considerations they were displeased, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.
Why, because they themselves wanted the very same thing and were upset because they didn't ask first. It wasn't fair to them but they would have done the same thing given the opportunity.
     Self is the problem.
How selfish it is to be upset about someone else moving ahead or advancing. Even more how hypocritical to be upset that it was not you.
Jesus has made it clear there will be many things they will be called to do for the Kingdom and for each other. God has a plan for everyone who comes to Him through faith in Jesus Christ. We are all disciples and should humble ourselves to obedience to our Lord.
To strive for a higher position among men or in glory is a sin.
What happened to Satan when he put "I" in front of everything? He was cast out of heaven to the depths of despair.
18  And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
Luke 10:18
12  How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13  For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God:
I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15  Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
Isaiah 14:12-15
Satan sought to be above even God and was cast to the depths for it.
So what happens when we seek gain and higher status among our brethren? We fail to serve God for His glory! We put "I" before others and seek favor and status and gain for ourselves above others.

Now Jesus begins to explain the simple truth about how the Kingdom of God is to operate for God's glory.
Sin is always the opposite value or counterfeit existence of what is right and holy.
Men seek gain in the kingdoms they themselves create. They seek authority, notoriety, prosperity and self satisfaction among their own kind often claiming to be doing it for God and His glory.
------Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
Matthew 20:25
However, in the Kingdom of God the greatest are the least.
Say what?
Yeah that goes against everything you have been taught in this world right? Well we are not talking about this world. If you are saved you are no longer of this world, you are above it. God has already lifted you in Christ to be in His household and to serve your brethren for His glory in His kingdom.
26  But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
27  And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
Matthew 20:26-27
What is a ministers purpose? What does a God fearing, faith filled, obedient minister to God do?
First he studies to be able to rightly divide the Word of God, then he prays to be able to take that Word to others and open their hearts for the Glory of God. He lives in the strength and truth of the Word being blessed to provide and help and lift others to come to Christ and remain in Christ.
He's the person at the bottom of the pile working to lift others to know God because he already does. He already knows the love God has for him through Jesus Christ and it is his purpose to bring others to know that love also.
A real leader in the Kingdom of God is the one doing the work.
I have often stated the fact, the difference between a leader and a pointer is calluses. Far too many people lose sight of Gods view upon His children.
They start out wanting to learn and be active in the body but soon become complacent because there are few positions in the church they attend for them to fill or advance too. Or they chose something that fits their abilities and time schedule and claim it is for God.
How many people do you know who are willing to donate something for a good cause but never have to time or real desire to roll up their sleeves and join in the work. I don't mean help for an hour or two. I mean get right in and help prepare and produce fruit.
    Well, there is the problem.
A person gets saved and begins to look with worldly eyes at how to work and even rise in service for God. Many look to rise so they can be the pointer and tell everyone else what to do. Yet it is the eyes of God we need to see through. A real leader is the one working to bring others alongside and then lift them to a greater service.
Yes the minister of your church needs to be the head but he also needs to be at the bottom showing the body how to serve. I can trust a leader with calluses!
28  Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Matthew 20:28
Many people will use the excuse, "well I don't know what God wants me to do." Well you never will unless you study, pray and jump in somewhere.
Start by helping other in your congregation. Not just with church functions but with their needs. Help them at their homes, help them with their kids, their repairs, and help them with whatever. Before long you will find others who will need help. Many will not be saved or perhaps they have fallen away from the body and need the experience of God’s love for others through you to bring them back.
Serving God is not just in the church you attend. It is not just a position in that congregation. The greatest servants are the ones who role up their sleeves and go out carrying the Word and the Love of God to others.
You don't have to knock on doors and rattle door knobs. Just go out and be of service to others and God will be with you, for you and through you for them.
5  But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
2 Timothy 4:5
When you become saved you become a minister to God. We have a misconception that a minister is the guy behind the pulpit only.
No, he is the guy lifting us to be ministers with him, or should be. Not ministers of the same congregation but ministers to the world and others in the congregation. New comers need someone to work with them and guide them and keep them on the lighted path. Who greater for the job than someone well grounded in the word and experienced in the presence of God through the Holy Spirit in their lives?
To be an encourager is to get behind someone and gently direct them to proceed. It is to step forward with them from in front, beside and behind them. Is that not what is promised in Psalm 23?
1  The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3  He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Psalms 23
David proclaimed the Lord was his leader (verse 2), beside him (verse4) and behind him (verse 6). That is the example we are all to follow with others in our congregation and even those in the world.
The world does not know God because it has never seen God. We have seen God and His kingdom through Christ Jesus and that is what is missing in the world. How will it ever change? When the world begins to see Christ Jesus in you then it will become willing to look further for what is missing in their lives.
Jesus gave us the only perfect example of the suffering servant. He gave his all to lift us to His Father, our Father in heaven.
28  Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Matthew 20:28
45  For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Mark 10:45
To be great in the kingdom of God we all need to follow in the footsteps of our Lord and Savior. Living to serve and lift others in the truth of Gods love for all of us glorifies God and that is our end. That is our purpose here and now as ministers and children of God.
If we humble ourselves to be Christ like the rewards will be far and above anything we could desire with our worldly minds. Just living with peace and joy in ones life is a greater reward than most people will ever know in this world.
Where are you in your ministry to God?
Are you seeking to rise in the ranks of men or rise in service to our Lord among men. They are not the same thing in Gods eyes.
The greatest among men are the ones who give their lives to lift others to know the love of God through faith and obedience to the living Word of God, Jesus Christ, AMEN!
