Matthew 19:10-12
The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #346-82621

10  His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
11  But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
12  For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

As we finish this short exchange between the Pharisees and Jesus we see also that the disciples are paying close attention to what is being said.
Remember the disciples have also been raised and taught to believe that divorce was acceptable because Moses allowed it. So when they heard the Pharisees questioning Jesus they were also somewhat taken back by the answer.
Here is the proof.
They themselves are questioning Jesus in belief they may not have understood Him. They were questioning the finality of marriage having been raised to believe there was a way to put a wife away without fear of sinning against God. Look at how they approach the problem.
If that is so, then.  Do you see what they are saying.
Well if that is true Jesus-----
Like they had a reason to believe marriage was a problem if they couldn't have it in a way they could fix it.
Jesus is teaching marriage has to be bound in and through God. It is not up to man to manage the sincerity of his vows. Marriage vows are made in the love and commitment God has for and with us. In marriage a man and a woman become one in their promise to each other and to God.
You see there were no ifs or buts on the cross. It was the perfect living Word of God sacrificed for our sin. Unconditional love for us was made to take our weakness, our sickness, our failures, and our sin on His shoulders and be punished in our stead. In faith we are married to Christ Jesus who gave Himself in Love and Obedience that we may live to love and be with Him forever.
Jesus gave Himself completely for us. No ifs or buts. His love was complete and unending. And that is how our love should be for Him.
Of course we are still in the flesh but in the Spirit we are to control the flesh and honor God through our love for His Son.
And how do we do that?
By bring our flesh into obedience to Him. If we love Christ Jesus with all our hearts and minds, the flesh will surely follow.  If we do not there will always be ifs and buts in our faith and our Christian walk.
It is frightening to me to hear people say they are Christians and believe the word of God but there are certain things that need to be addressed in a fleshly or worldly manner because this is reality.  Excuse Me! So faith in and obedience to the word of God became a fantasy when?
Let me assure you if you take on something in all sincerity like a spouse or an adoption or even personal care for someone, you are making a promise to be holy in that commitment. That means you are promising to come closer to Christ in all of your commitment. Holy Matrimony is not the ceremony. It is the life after the ceremony.
Hardhearted people choose to bend and modify and ignore the word of God to satisfy their immediate feelings or desires. Divorce for any reason other than unfaithfulness is one very obvious example. Many so called Christians today believe as most Jews did in the time of Jesus ministry. They believe divorce is justified if their spouse turns out to be less than they had assumed.
3  The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
Matthew 19:3
7  They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
Matthew 19:7
Verses 3 and 7 explain the Jews believed divorce was justified by permission given by Moses. Not only that but they believed it was justified for any cause they deemed reasonable.
People today believe that being married to someone is supposed to be joy filled happiness with one blessing after another and when that doesn't pan out they begin to accuse and blame their spouse and start looking for a way out by legal worldly standards claiming they are justified in doing so.
Justified by anything an attorney can persuade a judge to deem reasonable.
And yes this is very common in people who claim to love and honor God.
It's the ifs and buts in their hearts that tells them they are justified. It is their hardheartedness toward the Word of God and His love for them that lets them proceed with dishonoring Him with divorce.
Even the disciples with Jesus when the Pharisees were tempting Jesus were in some kind of disbelief or denial of what Jesus had given to be His answer. They were ready to refuse marriage if it were not possible to put a wife away for any reason or every cause as it is stated in the scriptures.
If they couldn’t have it their way then they wouldn't have it at all. Just like a bunch of spoiled little kids.
10  His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
Matthew 19:10
Jesus came back with the simple truth.
11  But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
Matthew 19:11
Be very aware here folks. This is Jesus plainly stating; Only people who receive the power of the truth of Gods’ Word can except the fact the promise they make to their spouse is a binding contract in the sight of God.
Only true Christians can understand the love God has for us and live to give that love to others especially their spouse. Only those who can and will live to fulfill the greatest of all commandments.
37   Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Matthew 22:37
29  And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
30  And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31  And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
Mark 12:29-31
The Pharisees and the disciples believed they were following the word of God because Moses had given their forefathers and them in extension a pass on total commitment with their wives. Surely if the great servant of the Lord, Moses, had given them a right to put away their wives it was not a sin to do so. But Jesus said it was not so from the beginning and therefore the Word of God had not changed.
However not everyone would be able to 11 ----receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
Matthew 19:11
Why is it that not everyone who hears the word of God is saved?
Because not everyone will receive the truth of the Word. God calls everyone at least once but it is by His Spirit that He draws some to be His own while allowing others to continue on their own path that leads away from Him.
Just like not all men will understand the love God has for them and live to give that love to others.
Jesus explains this by using the term eunuch.
First we must understand there are several forms of eunuchs. Most often it applies to persons unable to reproduce. Some are born this way; some are made this way by accident or by the hand of man. But the term can also be used to describe persons who have taken a vow of celibacy.
It is within this last definition that the word eunuch in some eastern courts also applied to persons who were raised to great levels in authority and power without being emasculated.
So by using this term Jesus is explaining some men will never be able to marry because there is no love in them. Some are made to be hard and stiff necked against the truth and love of God and will never know or live in that love. But there are also men who will receive the truth and live to honor God in marriage. Marriage to their spouse and Christ Jesus. It is these eunuchs so to speak who will be raised to great levels of power and authority in Gods court.
----He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.
Matthew 19:12
Everyone who is able to receive the truth of Gods’ love in salvation through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is able to understand and live in Gods’ love for us. Marriage is not something we should look upon as something people do because it’s natural. It is an inborn desire to have a spouse, a partner, a helper. But it is not an inborn desire to love and live with that person to honor and glorify God.
The proof is in what we see in the world today. The world promotes all kinds of relationships among people but never does it promote God honoring behavior. The worlds’ definition for love as we have covered before is always based on lust and self centeredness.
Gods’ definition of love is the giving of oneself to and for another.
16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16
If you love God for the life He gave you through His Son Jesus Christ than you should be able to live in and give that kind of love to your spouse in truth and obedience to God’s Word.
There is no divorce in the love of God, for you or through you.
----He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.
Matthew 19:12
