The Gospels in Harmony   Sermon #324-111820

4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
5  And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6  And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.
7  I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
Luke 15:4-7
8  Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?
9  And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.
10  Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.
Luke 15:8-10

Continuing in our study of Luke in our series we will be looking at the parables Jesus gave the Pharisees and scribes and all who believe they are so righteous they can point their fingers and accuse others of sin by association.
Before we begin, I would like to draw a line in the sand.
Do not use this teaching to justify your continued activities with sinners.
Do not use this teaching as an excuse to go and do sinful activities with your friends  and then tell yourself you are trying to get them to see Christ in you.
Christ would not go out and get drunk and party and tell or listen to dirty jokes and speak illicitly of others or gossip or support such activities in any way.
That is not how you come close to the lost.
Christians are called to walk in the steps of Christ. That means being the light of life with out becoming sin to do so.
The ninety nine sheep in the shepherds fold were left while the one was sought out. They were left because they were safe in the masters possession.
Real Christians walk in this world and do not fear the sin around them. They fear God who is greater than all sin in this world and that gives them the knowledge and reason to live for their master above the sin of this world.  The day of wrath against this world and it's sin filled ways is coming soon but not for the true followers of Jesus Christ. He will return for them in due time and keep them as His own.
We are called to reach out to all who will listen. We are called to be seen as children of God without a better than thou attitude like the scribes and Pharisees. We are not called to live like everyone in the world. We are not called to allow the world to dictate to us. The Word of God is our rule of law for life. It has nothing to do with sin yet calls us to reach out to all sinners.
Love is what makes us free from sin. Love is what keeps us. Love is what protects us and empowers us to come close to sinners. Love is what draws sinners into the light of life and saves them.
16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
John 3:16-17
God sent Christ, His perfect living Word, to be near us. He sent Him to show us the light. He sent Him to be the light and draw the lost away from the darkness. Did he sin to be like them so they would trust Him or be friends with Him first? No.
He came that the presence of the Kingdom of God could be seen in and through Him. He came in love for all of mankind; Gods greatest creation made in His image but lost to sin.

Now, let's look into our text once again.
4  What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? 5  And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
Luke 15:4-5
8  Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?
Luke 15:8

Jesus gives us two examples of something very precious being lost.
And when that precious thing is found there is great rejoicing by the owner and others who understand the importance of that find.
Now look if you will at the actions being taken by the shepherd and the house wife.
The shepherd searches diligently in the wilderness until he finds that one lost lamb that belongs to him and the woman lights a candle that she may see in all the darkness and sweeps the entire house until she finds that one lost coin that belongs to her.
These two persons are images of God. They have lost something most precious to them and will keep looking until they find it again.
All of mankind was lost to sin through disobedience to the Word of God.
So it must be the Word of God that and who brings us back to God.
Jesus Christ is that Shepherd that is willing to lift us to His shoulders and carry us to safety.  Jesus Christ is that light that shines in the darkness that we may be found no matter where we have wandered to. Jesus is the living Word of God that saves us from sin.
We are to follow in the footsteps of Christ. It was Christ who was sent, in love that we may know we are precious to God.
It is that love in us, for God, that makes us to rise and go out to look for the lost. It is Christ in us that shines in this dark and dying world that we may find the lost and it is the Spirit of God in us that empowers us to lift them and carry them to safety in the truth of the Word of God.
Now here is where the line is drawn.
Not all of the lost belong to God.
Not all sheep belonged to that one shepherd.
The woman wasn't looking for every bodies lost coins.
No they knew what belonged to them and sought to regain that lost item.
God knows who are His. He knows who will answer His call to return to Him. He knows who will be reunited with Him through His living Word, Jesus Christ.
We are called to carry the Word of God, the very light of life into the wilderness and into the darkness of sin that those who belong to God, the chosen of God may be found and lifted and returned to Him. We are called to be the ministers of God that the lost may be found. But not all will respond. Not everyone can hear the call or will see the light.
We do not know who will and who will not answer the call of God to salvation through the truth of the love of God through His Holy Word.
We are only called to be Christ like in our love for the lost and diligently seek those who will come to love and live for Jesus. God has predestinated certain people for us to find and shine a light and lift to return to Him. Each one of us is responsible for that person or persons. Just who and how many we do not know. But do not assume that all people you speak to will be saved. And do not assume you know who will. It is the power of God in His Word that works in the hearts of men. It is the will of God that we diligently seek the lost sheep and it is the presence of God that needs to shine that will show His lost the way to salvation.
There are many times I have attempted to bring the truth of the Gospel to unbelievers and been refused. There is nothing I can do about that. The truth was delivered. Perhaps they will never respond. Perhaps they will think about it and begin to look into the truth. Perhaps it is for someone else to water the seed I have planted. We do not know. We are only called to obey God in being ministers of Light and Love through the power of the Holy Spirit in us.
5  But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
2 Timothy 4:5
There is much joy in salvation. Most people today just want to be happy.
That is what the world preaches. That is Satan's counterfeit feeling.
The difference between happiness and joy is that one is fleeting and the other is eternal. Anyone can be happy. There are countless things that can make a person happy but just as many things if not more that can instantaneously take that happiness away. But joy endures. It is living in the peace and love of God that remains within you no matter what the world and its ruler/rulers bring upon you. That is praise worthy. That is what the angels, the ministers of God rejoice in. There is joy in those who know another soul has been added to the Kingdom of God and filled with the love and joy they already know. It is the power of life eternal that begins the moment a lost soul comes in confession and repentance, giving oneself to God through faith in Jesus Christ.
Please understand the word used by Christ is Joy not happiness.
10  Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.
Happiness is temporary, Joy is eternal. That means your salvation brings eternal joy, Great joy to the heavenly host. Are you ready to be lifted by the Word of God to join in joy filled praise to our Lord and Savior?
There is no time like the present to ask Jesus to take control of your life. If you know you are lost by the truth of the Word of God then it is time to humble yourself in prayer, repenting of your sin and confessing that Jesus is the only light that can lead you to eternal life. Give your life to Jesus and the angels will rejoice with you forever.
