Luke 14:34-35
The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #322-91320

34  Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
35  It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Luke 14:34-35

Here is a very sobering statement from Jesus Christ to the multitudes who were with Him.
25  And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,
Luke 14:25
Jesus is not using the word salt to describe anything less than a mineral that is so useful it is actually necessary for the betterment of men.
Salt is used to season food. It is used to enhance the natural flavors of food as well as being a preservative and even a purifying agent. It can be used to sterile soil as well as a binder for other useful minerals and fertilizing agents.
But when the salt is dissolved away what is left is of no value.
The salt in a Christian’s life is the earnest desire to live for Christ.
When that salt dissolves away what is left is of no value to the Kingdom of God. It has no worthy purpose.
If it loses its flavor how can it be restored?
You cannot put the flavor back once it’s gone.
What is it that gives you the true desire to live for Jesus?
It is nothing less than the Holy Spirit in you.
That is what keeps the oil flowing and the flame burning and the salt salty in you.
That’s why Paul said in Ephesians;
18  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Ephesians 5:18
The correct translation is --be being filled---with the Spirit.
Ok that means a continuous refreshing, growing, receptive and purposeful filling. It is not a second, third or any other charismatic fictious number of baptisms of the Holy Spirit.
When you are saved you are sealed with the Holy Spirit once and for all and His work in you is never ending bringing you closer and closer to the image of Christ.
18  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
2 Corinthians 3:18
So in essence what Jesus is saying is; be being filled with the Holy Spirit that you do not lose the savour or flavour of Christ in you.
However the Holy Spirit only works in you for the glory of God. He does not make you grow! He is your helper. He helps you grow. When you lose the desire to stay near our Lord and settle into a worldly attitude of holiness, the Holy Spirit will step back. There will be no fresh filling. He will not abandon you, but He will do nothing more than quietly wait until you ask for Him once again in all sincerity.
Let's look at the corresponding verses in Matthew and Mark to see what can be drawn and added to the meaning of these verses in Luke.
13  Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Matthew 5:13
50  Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
Mark 9:50
Matthew adds it will be cast out and trodden under foot of men.
Once again we see that men will do the casting out and men will do the treading on it.
This point is being emphasized even in Mark when he writes: Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
That once again is referring to men.
As I stated in our last sermon; the world is run by Satan and his servants are the unsaved. They will always be ready to point out a person who has claimed salvation and who claims to be a disciple and servant of God when they do not show they are any different than the rest of the world.
The testimony of that person is cast out as a lie because there is no proof of the power of God in and through them.
Look folks, it is hard enough to walk a straight and narrow path that never lets you down. There will always be Satan's servants who will lie against you trying to pull you down. Why give them the ammunition to not only pull you down but make it seemingly impossible to rise up again?
There are 2 things that happen when you lose sight of the cross.
1 You no longer live for Christ. You more than likely claim Him as your Savior but He is not Lord in your life. You live for yourself among the servants of Satan more than likely keeping your mouth shut about Jesus so you don't have to face their wrath or ridicule as well as their critically pointed fingers.
2  You have used the Lords name in vain. You have made the claim but do not live for Christ! You have made an oath but failed to live up to it!
Exodus 20:7
7  Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Did you think taking the Lords name in vain was swearing? Swearing an oath using the Lords name is using His name in vain but when you become a Christian, a follower and disciple of Jesus you become a minister to Him. A priest in the family of God. A living, breathing representative of His holiness and righteousness. You have sworn your life to Him. You are the salt of God ready and able to bring flavor and preservation as well as cleansing and purifying into the world through His presence in you! But when you become lax and lose sight of your purpose, the world sees nothing but a hypocrite. You have given God a black eye because the world sees nothing you have claimed in and through your salvation. You have claimed the Lord and denied Him. You have used the Lords name in vain. You claim to be lifted and changed for the glory of God but live a life that does not show His presence. You have taken the Lords name in vain!
Anyone can see you do not live in sincerity for Jesus Christ. You may well want to but you make little effort to show it. And if you do it is all in your own power. The Holy Spirit will not just jump right in until you sincerely give yourself to His control and teaching and direction.
Get it figured out.
Jesus is our SAVIOR and LORD!
You cannot claim Him and deny Him at the same time.
He is always ready to forgive you of your sin because He died for you.
He is always ready to lift you when you fall.
He is always ready to reinstate you into His service in this world.
And it is done by His Holy Spirit in you.
The Holy Spirit will rise to increase you for the Glory of God when you rise with the desire to do the same. When you cast off the world and defy the lies and false accusations that come with the pointed fingers of Satan's servants you will soon be walking above their words. They will not be able to pull you down to their level of degradation and defilement.
The power and presence of God will shine in and through you through your faith and obedience to His Word, Jesus Christ.
You will be the salt that will serve its purpose in this world.
Men will not be able to cast you out nor trodden you under foot.
They will try but the presence of the power of God in you will not allow them to do so.
Be being filled with the Holy Spirit by continuously living for Jesus Christ.
Walk with the Salt of Salvation and Faith and Obedience to our Lord Jesus.
For the world will be quick to point you out when you do not!
The world is looking for those who will help them use the Lords name in vain!
When you allow or even give the world a reason to point their fingers at you and say, "See he's just like us!" You are being cast out. You are no longer walking in a way that God can be seen and Christ may be witnesses. The Holy Spirit is no longer working in and through you to honor and glorify God. There is no Salt in you! I'm not saying He has left and you have lost your salvation. I'm saying God will not show himself strong in those whose hearts are not perfect toward Him. (ref. 2 Cor 16:9).
9  For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.
2 Chronicles 16:9
Look at the last part of that verse. --henceforth thou shalt have wars!
What did Mark say in his recording of this portion of scripture recorded from Jesus’ teaching?
50  Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
Mark 9:50
---have peace one with another.
The world will jump on you like a bear on a bee hive if you do not have a perfect heart toward our Lord! That means living for Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit for the glory of God.
Anything less and the Holy Spirit will become silent and allow you to suffer the consequences of disobedience.
Was it not Pliable in John Bunyans, Pilgrim's Progress that went with Christian only to turn back and be brutally criticized by his friends?
Men will cast you out! They will gladly take you back but only after they shame you to the point you do not ever show your faith and obedience around them again.
Yes, there are many Christians today who you would never know are Christians because they do not show the presence of God in them in public.
They fear being ridiculed and slandered by their neighbors and friends and the world in general. Men will cast you out!
    Listen to me!
34 Salt is good:---The presence of God being seen in and through you is good. The world and all who choose to follow Satan are not good. Don't give them a reason to point and soil the name of God. Don't hide in fear because of the things they may say to and about you. Walk in faith and obedience, living for Jesus, teaching and preaching the Gospel for the Glory of God. That is salt that will not lose its savour!
He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Luke 14:35
