Luke 14:28-33
The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #321-82920
28  For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
31  Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
32  Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
33  So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:28-33

"Well no one ever told me that!"
Oh my beloved readers and followers of this ministry. I am here to tell you without a doubt in my mind by the power of the presence and teaching of the Holy Spirit in me, you need to know that God has called you to rise in the truth of His word to be an evangelist of the Gospel of truth. A disciple is someone who knows and honors God by spreading the good news of the free gift of life by grace through faith in our LORD Jesus Christ.
The Life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for our sin is the Gospel. It is the good news of salvation for all who will give their lives to and for Him.
Faith in Jesus Christ has been grossly reduced to saying a repeat after me prayer for salvation and believing that’s all there is to being saved.
Real repentance of sin and confession that you believe Christ was crucified for you and was then raised again by the Spirit of God to be seated at the right hand of God as our High Priest, is seldom a part of most folks salvation.
Believing Jesus is our mediator, helping us in prayer and escorting us into the throne room of God that we may ask God for anything through our faith and devotion and obedience to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is seldom taught. It’s a pray once, get out of hell teaching now days in many contemporary churches.
Oh there is a lot more to salvation than a repeat after me prayer and a church membership. I have even found several folks whose answer to; Are you saved, was "I was baptized before I left for the service (military service) or I was baptized as a child."
Let me tell you straight out. There was nothing in that water that joined you with Jesus Christ. There was nothing in that ceremony that saved you! You are not saved because you submitted to be a participant in a Baptismal ceremony. It is faith in Jesus Christ that brings you to the foot of the cross and it is repentance of your sin filled life that brings justification and the gift of the Holy Spirit in you.
Do you know what your repentance of your sin and confession of Jesus as your Lord and Savior is? It is your first act of obedience to the Word of God.
Yes, Faith and Obedience cannot be separated. They are always joined in Christ. Obedience to the Word is not works. It is the way of life for the blood bought, born again, spirit filled, child of God. Disobedience is what separates us from God. It is the beliefs and action of the children of Satan.
We are all born into sin; we are all the children of Satan until we open our hearts to the truth of the shed blood of Christ for our very souls. Until we understand; that by faith in the atoning blood of Christ we may be saved and joined once again with God through Christ. Until we come before Jesus on bended knees confessing him as our Lord and Savior.
Lord and Savior! Not just savior!
Jesus is Lord in our lives and being such we are His servants ready and willing and able by the Spirit of God to rise, to fulfill the good works that God has preordained for us.
11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:11
10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:10
Now think if you will about what Jesus is to you.
Did you come to him in His entirety? Did you think the term Lord Jesus was just a ranking like sergeant or general? Or that He was the owner of vast properties or something?
Lord and Savior, is what He is and what He is to the true believer. Not one or the other but both.
Now, I can give you a simple example which you can apply to yourself.
If you were the owner of a restaurant and the head chef you would have the authority to say who may enter your establishment and the ability feed them the best meal they have ever had.
Knowing this, what would be your answer to someone who wishes to enter your establishment but refuses to eat your food? Or perhaps they want all of everything you can cook but refuse to be seated in your restaurant? Either way that person is an insult to you and is not worthy of you in any capacity.
If you go to a fine dining establishment to eat, do you not also desire be seated within that establishment?
When we come to Jesus we come for all of Him or we get none of Him.
There are many today who claim to be Christians; many who claim to be saved because they have said a sinner’s prayer and some even attend or belong to a religious organization but their Lord is the world. They claim salvation but serve everything but Jesus. He is not the Lord of their lives and therefore what they will here on their day of judgment is:
23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Matthew 7:23
41  Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Matthew 25:41
So now that we have established the totality of who Christ is for us we must now establish the totality of who we are for Christ.
In our text we see that Jesus gives two common day examples that should be easy to understand and relate to the true meaning of being his disciple and a child of God.
Remember we are not born children of God.
We are all born into sin, we are the children of Satan until we come to know the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and give our hearts and bodies to Jesus. Being a child of God is not just spiritual.
Did Jesus just give Himself spiritually for us or did He give His all?
Of course we know He gave His all, so why would we not give our all for Him?
28  For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
Luke 14:28
In verse 28, I would like to draw your attention to the word "tower."
Many times I have heard preachers reduce this word to the word "house."
They miss interpret or diminish the full meaning and power of this verse by doing so. Yes, it is easier for folks to relate to the word house in this day and age because so few are likely to even think about building a tower. Yet the word "tower" was used by Jesus to emphasize the true desire of a follower.
The word tower is used to describe what a disciple wants to build against the wiles of the devil from whom they have escaped through faith in Jesus. The word "tower" means a high fortress, a look out and wall of defense. That is a much more powerful description of the Christians desire to be in Christ than a house. Even the people in the days Christ walked among men had houses to live in but a fortress, a watch tower and a look out were things built for defense and protection against anything that could and would come to take and destroy.
So please understand when you come to Jesus as Lord and Savior you are coming to join His Kingdom and in doing so you are building a fortress against Satan and his world.
To build a fortress takes much more than to build a house. It is much stronger and will last much longer.
I believe that is the problem with many want to be Christians. They come ready to build a house. A humble abode suited just for them and their families. They have enough sincerity to quickly construct a life they can call faithful and devoted and settle in quite content having done little and have no plans to do more.
I believe that is what Jesus refers to as a house built on the sand.
But here Jesus refers to the true disciple, the faith filled and obedient child of God building a "tower."  A fortified lookout.
A place of protection. Large heavy and costly. More than likely it will take many years to build. It will require true dedication to finish but it will be a blessing of strength and protection for many.
A tower must have a strong foundation because of the weight it must bear.
Each stone must be cut to fit and set precisely to bear up the rest of the stones that will be set after.
Now think if you will the difference between building a stick frame house and a stone fortress with a lookout tower.
Just considering the work and cost, how many would willingly choose to build the tower? Yet when you come to Jesus to give your all that is what you are signing up to do. Living in Christ is building that tower of defense against Satan but it takes you personally to get the foundation set which is studying the Word of God and have sound doctrine to stand on. It is being the laborer, which means being the teacher, the preacher, and the evangelist. It means being so filled with charity and love for others that you can offer a hedge against the world for them.
But what happens to the person who wants to be saved but does not follow through with their devotion to Christ in their lives? What does the world see in them?
29  Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
30  Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

The world will always be quick to recognize and point out a hypocrite! Satan’s eyes also run to and fro throughout the whole earth to point out those who claim to be Christians yet bow to Him. Just building a house for the Lord is accomplished by most who want to be known as a Christian when they have the time. Building a tower is for the few who devote their lives to not only thanksgiving for the gift of eternal life but honor God by reaching out to bring others into the protection of the fortress they themselves have become a part of.
Likewise we see in verses 31 and 32:
31  Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
32  Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
Fighting Satan on our own is like going into battle completely unarmed and outnumbered. You may be the ruler of your household but you are nothing against the world. Yet there is much work involved with becoming armed and dressed for battle in the Lords army. There is much involved with staying aware and prepared and able to fight against the wiles of the devil. Unity with and in Christ takes dedication to study and pray and applying the Word of God. Encouraging others as they encourage us is in the Lord is necessary for standing in the truth of the Word.
33  So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
Verse 33 once again sums up the outcome of halfhearted, hypocritical, professing Christianity.
You cannot be a disciple of Jesus. I’m not saying that you never can be at some point when you cast off the world and rise to accept Jesus as your LORD and SAVIOR. What Jesus is saying here is there is no way you will ever be a disciple as long as you have not come to Jesus in total desperation and repentance. You have not been anointed with the oil of the Lord to be a child of God. You are only fooling yourself with your uncommitted salvation and half hearted obedience.
Only those who count their lives to be nothing without living for Jesus can be His disciples!
Amen!
