John 10:19-28
The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #311-32120

19  There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.
20  And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?
21  Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?
22  And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.
23  And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.
24  Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
25  Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.
26  But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
27  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
28  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

19  There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.
John 10:19
Some believed and others did not.
I would like everyone to look at the words used to describe the differences between these two groups and then apply them to what you hear, see and know today.
First the division was among the Jews.
Oh excuse me, the division was among the holier than thou religious leaders and their followers.
20  And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?
John 10:20
MANY of them said--- did you get that!
Many is the word used to give us a clearer picture of a lopsided count here.
21  Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?
John 10:21
OTHERS is not the same as many. It is the smaller number that is left.
So first we have a whole bunch of religious practitioners who have been listening to the Words of Jesus. Many as in the greater number were ready to accuse Him of being possessed or not right in the head. They were ready to ignore everything He had to say because it was not what they wanted to hear.
However, there were others. Not many but others who began to reason what they heard to go along with what they saw. It is one thing for a man to claim himself to be something but another to prove it in action.
Now, just for a moment, let's apply this to our own lives.
What do people see us do that proves we walk in the power of the grace of God. What do they see in our everyday lives and interactions with other people? Do we live lives of thanksgiving and overflowing joy for God's provisions? Do we live charitably toward others; giving our time, efforts and even provisions out of love for our brethren?  Can the world including the many religious hypocrites see Christ in and through us? Can they see that we are walking and working in the power of God's love and calling for us? Can they see we serve above our personal abilities and strengths?
The Pharisees were well aware of the miracles that Jesus had brought about and words of wisdom and truth that He spoke. However, they chose not to believe their ears or their eyes and in doing so condemned themselves to hell.
Even today when we speak the truth of the Gospel and walk and work in the power of God through the presence of Him in His Holy Spirit, people who refuse to hear the truth or acknowledge the power of the presence of God are likewise condemning themselves. Jesus is present and visible in every blood bought, born again, Spirit filled, disciple, minister and evangelist of the truth of God in this world. God has chosen the preaching of His Word through men that men would hear and see the truth of His presence.
Get a handle on this folks! Jesus was a man and God standing in the presence of many in this world speaking and working in and with the power of God and many refused to recognize the truth. Even today real children of God stand and speak the truth and live lives that prove the presence of God yet many will deny it. Even today they are condemning themselves just as the Pharisees did.
The many were the religious elite. Even today the many who will not believe the true disciples, ministers and evangelists of the Word of God will be those who believe in themselves or their good works by their standards or their adherence to their religious organizations demands and standards.
They will not give an individual a second glance even when they live and work in the joy and power of the Love of God.

22  And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.
John 10:22
As we continue in our text we have a break in the teaching of Christ toward the Pharisees. There is a lapse in time and a change of location and when Jesus takes up the teaching of the Good Shepherd again He is speaking to the Jews in general.
Here is the connection. No matter where He was the many refused to hear and see Him as the Son of God. They refused to recognize the truth of the prophecies they were given by their fathers in the scriptures recorded and saved for them.
23  And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.
John 10:23
This was a large covered area adjoining Herod's temple. It would have been large enough for many Jews to gather round Him.
24  Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
John 10:24
Once again, Jesus was questioned. But look at the intent or the demeanor of their questions and questioning.
-----How long dost thou make us to doubt?----
John 10:24
Their question was meant to challenge Jesus to perform great miracles at their command. They refused to see the miraculous works He did in love for those who came to Him in faith. They only wanted proof on demand like He was there for their use.
First they demanded to see proof and then they basically accused Him of lying to them in all that He had already said. They accused Him of hiding the truth in His Words about being the Good Shepherd. They were not able to understand what He was saying of Himself by using the analogy of the Good Shepherd, the porter and the hirelings. Their ears could not hear the truth because their hearts were set against the truth. So they demanded Jesus just flat out claim to be the Son of God and the prophetic Messiah.
25  Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.
John 10:25
Ok folks, once again we have Jesus speaking the truth and proving it by the work's He is doing in the power and the presence of God.
Take this to heart. Not everyone will believe the words of truth you speak in the power of the Holy Spirit for them to receive. Not everyone will believe your testimony of salvation and the miraculous changes that has occurred in and through you. Why?
Because they are not chosen to see and believe. They are not God's lost sheep. They are sold out to another.
26  But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.                                                                                      27  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
John 10:26-27
Let me ask you something. Did you hear someone speaking the truth of the Gospel or giving their testimony of salvation through Faith in Jesus before you turned to take a serious look into the Word of God? Did you listen to a sermon or even gospel music and come to recognize it was more than just a man giving a speech and a song with rhyming lyrics and a nice melody? Yes the Holy Spirit calls us to hear and see the truth and God has ordained every true believer to be a shining light in Christ.
20  Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
21  For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
22  For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
23  But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
24  But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
25  Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26  For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
27  But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
1 Corinthians 1:20-27
God has already known His chosen from before the foundation of the world. He already knows the beginning from the end and the end from the beginning. The end is where all who have given their lives to God through faith in Jesus Christ will live with God in His Kingdom forever.
28  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
John 10:28
Only the people who God already knows as His own will hear His call through the power of the Holy Spirit in this world. His Spirit lives and works though every born again Christian who actually rises in His power and direction to be a shining light in this world.
Many people do not want to believe in the doctrine of election. But God is sovereign. He is a loving God who gave His son as a sacrifice that anyone who repents of his sin and puts his faith in the blood of Christ will be saved.
There is no need to worry if you are one of God's elect if you give your life to Jesus. If you hear the voice of Jesus in the Word of God, written or spoken or even sung to you, you are being called to follow in the footsteps of Christ.
If you Admit you are a sinner and Believe Jesus died on the cross for you then rose again to be our Lord and Savior at the right hand of God you will be saved.
If you confess with your mouth and Commit your life to Him forever you will never wonder if you are one of God's elect.
28  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
John 10:28

If you are reading this sermon right now and are hearing Jesus calling to you then pause right here and bow your head and ask Jesus to come into your heart. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth.
8  But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Romans 10:8-9
In all sincerity commit your life to Jesus and you will never need doubt your salvation.

We will continue with the words of Jesus to the Jews and to us in our next sermon. Until then pray God will have mercy on His own as we face more and more of the evil of disease in this world and the sin of those who put themselves above the lives of others.
