The Gospels in Harmony               Sermon #164  Posted 9/16/18

Matthew 13:31-32   Mark 4:30-32    Luke 13:18-19
The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #164-91218

31  Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:
32  Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.
Matthew 13:31-32
30  And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
31  It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:
32  But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.
Mark 4:30-32
18  Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?
19  It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.
Luke 13:18-19

It is God's plan for His faith filled and obedient children, the disciples, ministers and evangelists of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to sow the good seed of truth in the world that He created. It may be hard to believe God created this world because of all of the evil and greed and debauchery that is prevalent in this day and age. However the world God designed and Jesus made is still here being held together by the Holy Spirit. We cannot see, or perhaps it is difficult to see God's magnificent creation because of the un-holiness that has covered it. God created the world to be in harmony with all things and man was His greatest creation because man has a soul and spirit and was created in the image of God.
Having the knowledge that the souls of all men still belong to God, it is by God's design that His faithful servants sow the seed of truth, spiritually, for all men to take to heart or reject. It is a tiny thing compared to all the lies Satan casts upon the senses of men, but it is not a feeling. No the truth is the only thing that fills the void that was made so long ago when man was spiritually and physically separated from God. The truth is in the Word, Jesus Christ Himself. It is the Gospel of Jesus Christ that brings back the truth to our hearts and it is the heart that desires God in truth. That is the good soil that will take in the Gospel that it will grow for the glory of God.
The parable of the sower explained the soils of the heart and what happens to the seed that was cast upon and in the good soil. But now we are looking at the seed itself.
Look at all the temptations of the world; all the things that are available for us to be entertained with and involved with and live for. Each one starts as a desire. Just a peek or a taste or a sample to satisfy a curiosity. Oh but soon it will become a lust that must be satisfied and that satisfaction is nothing less than sin. It becomes a god to the user and abuser and it will be the death of many.
What am I talking about? Anything that is unholy in the sight of God.
Anything that draws us away from the presence and honor and glory of God. There are whole lifestyles that consume the souls of men. There are an endless number of fads that draw men away from holiness and there are the same old practices that keep men from giving their lives completely to Christ. I am talking a range of total blasphemy of the Word to being involved with gossip and slander and believing false accusations.
The first is the greatest and the last is the smaller when compared in size, but even the smallest sin, like a seed will grow to become a greater barrier for the light of truth to shine through.
We can look at seeds as greatest to smallest in size or in number or both.
Certainly the number of seed that Satan has sown is far greater than that of God. Jesus Christ and His holiness and righteousness was sown in the earth and then raised once for all who will accept the truth of His finished work for their salvation.
24  Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
John 12:24
One seed cast down for all to be lifted. God's Word was given and did not come back to Him void.
Satan must continue sowing seeds of evil and despair, of lies and hatred and lust and everything that is unholy. His plan is to fill the world with his tares that the wheat cannot grow for the glory of God.
But the many seeds of Satan are still not as mighty as the one seed of God, sown in love and raised in truth and holiness and righteousness.
----------------The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:
Matthew 13:31
Jesus is bringing the work of God down to the simplest form of comparison. He is painting a picture with this parable that would be very hard for most people to not understand.
(The kingdom of heaven)---The very existence and presence of God.
(is like a grain of mustard seed)---- One grain is all that is necessary.
God's plan of salvation for mankind did not need to be planted more than once.
17  For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
Romans 5:17
Satan brought sin into the world through one man, Adam, but he had to keep planting more and more seed for his plans to succeed. Do you think that he just got Adam and Eve to listen to Him once and then has sat back and watched his garden grow? No! Satan has every unsaved soul working for him. They live and spread his lies for him. They are busy cultivating sin throughout the world because of unbelief in Jesus Christ. But don't think Satan is not there keeping his servants desiring more and needing more until they die. Satan is still planting seed that makes men want and do things that were unimaginable just a few short years ago. This is why I say Satan is still planting because it's how he keeps men desiring new ways to sin.
(which a man took, and sowed in his field)----But the Seed sown in love by God only needed to be sown once.
Jesus died for our sin but there was no sin in Him. Therefore, He was raised once and for all. His truth and holiness and righteousness grew in His resurrection and became a tree for all who seek refuge from the sin and death that is in the world.
32  Which indeed is the least of all seeds:
Matthew 13:32
The mustard seed was not the smallest seed in existence, but it was in Israel. In this case Jesus is using what is known to the people of Israel so to them the mustard seed was the least in size. It may well have also been the least planted because it was used for seasoning and not for food in large quantities. One mustard seed will grow to give all that is needed.
(but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs,)----Greatest in size and usefulness. It is the most valued by many because it gives so much.
(and becometh a tree,) A very large bush that would have to be cut down like a tree. This gives us the impression of a mustard seed becoming something firmly rooted and strong of trunk and limb.
Now think about the parable of the sower where the seed was choked by weeds and briars. Choked by the ways of the world and crowded out of growth in the light of truth. But not the mustard seed. No, it grows above and beyond all other plants that are seeded with a purpose. It is food and shelter, even a place to rest and be protected.
(so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.)
The birds of the air in the parable of the sower, were a description the followers and servants of Satan; the lost who are obedient to his lies and practices. Yet Jesus says they come seek a place to rest and hide and nest.
Let me tell you, this is a salvation message!
It is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The good news of the coming, the ministry, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ that gives all of us who will seek Him a place to rest, a place to hide and a place to live.
Are we not all followers of Satan's lies until we come to the knowledge of the truth in our hearts?
It is Jesus Christ that was given as a kernel or seed to die and be resurrected to bring forth all who would come to know Him and seek refuge in Him, to the safety of the kingdom of heaven.
The birds stand for sinners. Sinners are Satan's followers, plain and simple.
30  And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
Mark 4:30
Jesus is using things that are commonly known, as comparisons to explain the truth about Himself being offered in sacrifice to rise anew for all to come and seek shelter and life in Him. The Word of God is sown in the good soil of a willing and wanting heart. A heart that has been broken by the knowledge of the presence of sin. It is watered by the Spirit of truth and grows far and above the weeds and briars, the lies and practices of Satan's followers. It will become like a tree, planted for a purpose and blessed to be so much more.
Jesus is saying He is for everyone who will come and accept Him as the truth and make it their home with Him, for life.
The Gospel is a small thing compared to the lies and temptations of the Devil, but it never needs added to. It has remained the same from the fall of man until now. The whole Bible is about Jesus. It never changes! Not one jot or tittle. It cannot be added to nor does it need to be renewed.
18  For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Matthew 5:18
All that one must do is repent unto faith and confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
ABC--Admit, Believe and Commit!
Satan must keep adding and renewing his temptations and distractions and lies in order to keep what he has stolen. But one seed of holiness and righteousness is greater than all the sin that was, is and will be.
If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior there is no time like the present to answer the call of God by His Holy Spirit. You would not be reading this sermon if the Holy Spirit had not called you to come and see and hear and know. The very same seed that was given for all men is waiting to be planted in the broken and prepared soil of your heart. Reach out to God through repentance unto faith and accept the truth in your heart through the watering of the Word by the Holy Spirit.
2  But his delight is in the law of the Lord;
and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,
that bringeth forth his fruit in his season;
his leaf also shall not wither;
and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Psalms 1:2-3
The Kingdom of Heaven is the shelter, the sanctuary, the home of all who live in faith and obedience to the Word of God. Faith and obedience grow with no limits because there is no limit to the love God has for you.
Ask the Holy Spirit to prepare your heart to receive Jesus for love and for life. The truth of the Gospel will grow in you and you will be like a tree rooted and planted in and for and with Him.
AMEN!
