Matthew 13:24-30
The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #163-9918

24  Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
25  But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
26  But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
27  So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?
28  He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
29  But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
30  Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
Matthew 13:24-30

Matthew alone gives the telling of this parable. He also gives the explanation by Jesus in verses 36-43.
So in addition to the telling and explaining we will be studying the present day application.
All of Jesus' parables were given for all men to hear and apply to their lives that they may see themselves in the clear light of truth.
Let's begin.
The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
Matthew 13:24
The kingdom of heaven------ is where God walks and lives and works and keeps His own. It is holy and pure and righteous and kept for all who desire to be with God above all things. God made the world and all that is in it to be at peace and filled with life for the good of all. He made Adam and Eve to be His loving and faithful children to cherish and keep for all time. He made them to bring forth more of their kind in the same manner of faith and obedience in love. But Satan beguiled them; he made them believe his lies in order to take them away from the presence of God. He stole them as a thief steals with the intent of gain from what is not his. Satan convinced Adam and Eve to sin against God and they became Satan's children. Even their children were separated from God by the sin that entered in through Adam and Eve.
Satan did not stop there. He convinced Cain that some of His produce was good enough to offer unto God and then convinced him that Abel was the one to blame for God's rejection of his offering. Satan planted the seed of hate and vengeance and it grew and spread through the actions of Cain.
The seeds of pride and arrogance and greed and everything that is sin in the eyes of God were planted by Satan's lies in the world that God had created for His own. Everything good was being forced to live side by side with everything evil.
Now before we proceed I would like each one of you, who have repented unto faith and committed your life to Jesus Christ, to think of yourself as a seed that Jesus Christ Himself has sown in the good soil of the world He created by the direction of God our Father.
Even though you were born into sin, by grace through faith you have been born again in the holiness and righteousness of the Word of God.
23  Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
1 Peter 1:23
3  Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
John 3:3
You are once again the seed of holiness being raised to live in a world that will be cleansed of all unrighteousness that Satan has planted for his glory. Look around you! Read the headlines! Look at your neighbor, your coworkers, your relatives and even your family members. Do their mouths and actions fit what you know God has commanded as holiness and righteousness? Do they live to produce fruit for the glory of God or are they producing fruit that spoils faster than themselves.
We just posted a sermon from the James series(Sermon #24) and it spoke of being afflicted.
9  Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
James 4:9
This speaks of the Christian being aware of his surroundings. Being alert to the dangers and evils that one must walk through each day of their lives in this world. It is being knowledgeable of the sin that lurks to fool and overtake each one of us who is saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
As a blood bought, born again, Spirit filled, child of God you are once again spiritually restored to the Garden of Eden, but physically you must endure the decaying of the world, the nations, and the societies within it.  You are once again planted in the good soil of faith and obedience and it is the Spirit of truth that waters you with the Word that you will grow to be above the sin and evil that is consuming this world, in this day and age.
25  But while men slept,------This speaks of all who are not aware of the wiles of the Devil; not on guard against the advances of his servants and not watchful for signs of the enemy approaching from a distance.
The laughing and joyful Christian is easily overtaken by the wiles of the devil because while they have the right and desire to be filled with joy they should never take their eyes off of the ever present dangers of falling by the wayside or even into one of Satan's snares. When you become a Christian, you no longer carry Satan's banner or his flaming darts. You now carry God's banner and are a target for Satan's darts.
Always be aware that Satan will plant seeds of disobedience in your path as you walk toward our Lord and His Heavenly Kingdom. Jesus gave command to His disciples and us in extension to be wise to the ways of Satan but remain in the ways of the Lord.
16  Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
Matthew 10:16
25  But while men slept,------While no one was on guard or aware of the coming of the enemy---his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
Matthew 13:25
What a picture this verse paints for those who desire to walk upright in the eyes of the Lord. Satan is sowing the seed of sin all around us continually. He does not have to attack us directly. No, Satan is far more likely to persuade us to sin. He makes sin so visible and acceptable to the multitudes that even Christians begin to lower themselves and their Christian values. When a lie is told enough times by enough people it becomes believable. It becomes acceptable and even permissible.
What do you tolerate in your household that you would not want Jesus to walk in and see or hear? What do you ignore in your surroundings that you could and should eliminate from your presence?
The reason I am asking this is because you really do want to be recognized as a God fearing and faithfully obedient fruit producing member of the Kingdom of God. There are many who walk and talk Christianese. They are the professing Christians who are busy misleading others in false salvations and false religions. They are the modern day tares.
They look and act and talk like they are real Christians and real children of God, but they are as lost the most vile sinner. I'm talking about people in the world who proclaim they are religious.  People who talk one way in church and another outside. People who act holy when they feel the need but live unholy the rest of the time. They live with and tolerate the sin and filth and evil in this world and think an hour or two a week in a church keeps them from being recognized as a member of Satan's world.
26  But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
Matthew 13:26
As a pastor I have seen and known many people who wanted to be known and seen as Christians but they would not separate themselves from the sin that they grew up in and surrounded and influenced them. They worked harder at hiding and covering their tolerance and involvement in sin then they would have worked just ridding it from their lives.
27  So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?
Matthew 13:27
Did I corner them and threaten then and cast them down for the behavior I knew was not in respect to the Word of God?
No, I preached the truth and let the power of God work through His Word. I prayed against the sin that had entered the congregation in them and as a result they would confess and change or would make any excuse they could to leave and not come back.
We must remember we are all born in sin and not all of us are blessed with a firm and encouraging guide and teacher. The best thing for a pastor to do is keep preaching the truth and let the Holy Spirit convict the unsaved. Let God do His work through the Word whether you are teaching, preaching or evangelizing to the world. They will either believe with their hearts and receive true salvation or they believe with their heads and be fooled by Satan to compromise. They will be fooled into believing they can be just as saved as the next guy by the way they want to follow the Word; until they are confronted with actually being upright and holy.
But remember, Jesus states the good seed was planted in the world. We are not talking about the church alone. The church is included in the world but the seed and field that Jesus is talking about is every person in the world.
28    He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
29  But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
Matthew 13:28-29
We are not to point our fingers and make people adhere to strict order and command. No, that is to be done willingly in love with word of God. Real Christians want to live for Christ all the time. They can be guided and corrected by the truth in the Word.
12  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
It is not our place to say who is and is not saved, but it is our place to encourage everyone to give their lives to Christ in faith and obedience. There will always be people, even in our houses of worship who have not committed themselves to discipleship, ministry and evangelism. They want to be recognized as or called Christians but will be the first to allow compromise and the fruit of Satan into that house. Be aware of the tares who will persuade others to cast their good fruit for an easier less committed path.
30  Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
Matthew 13:30
First the tares---- The false and uncommitted professing Christians. The self-righteous and self reliant Christians who have a religion above all others. It's a religion that justifies them on their terms. They will be gathered in bundles! I believe that should give us an idea of the quantity of the deceived there are. They will be bound together never to escape and burned in a fire that never ends.
But the wheat; the seed of God that grows and brings forth fruit, 23  But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
Matthew 13:23
It is the truly committed disciple, minister and evangelist that will be gathered into the keeping of our Lord and Savior. The Confessing Christians who humble themselves in the Word of God to walk and serve in the likeness of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
I would like to make something very clear here. It is the tares that are removed from the wheat by the judgement of God. It is sin that is removed from God's creation. When you repent unto faith, sin is removed from your spirit. Your flesh will die and return to the earth but your spirit is washed in the blood of Christ by grace through faith and you will be presented to God  as His perfect creation.
Will you continue to sin while you are in this earthly body? Yes!
But it will not be your desire to do so unless you are only professing to be saved. Unless you are just a look alike Christian going and doing all the things that are humanly recognized as being religious and not spiritually recognized as a faithfully obedient child of God.
You see this parable is not talking about the blatant refusel of the Word of God. It is talking about the user of the Word of God. The people who use the Word to glorify themselves to look all kinds of holy in the sight of men. They are the people who use the pastor to do their reading and studying and ministering and evangelizing. They are the people who want to do as little as possible to appear saved. They look like the real thing but there is no truth in them. They are Satan's counterfeit Christians. They are just a bundle of want to be Christians who will be horribly and sorrowfully turned away and cast into the Lake of Fire with their father the devil. Satan, the deceiver of all, who will not hear the truth with their hearts and believe in their spirit to confess with their mouths the Lord Jesus Christ as their one and only savior and path to righteousness.
9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:9-10

But the wheat is not tainted by the tares. The wheat bears fruit for the sower that is taken into God's storehouse. There will always be deceived, false Christians challenging us to compromise our faith and obedience to the truth in the Word. But real Christians will not submit to the lies Satan has raised them to believe and produce.
------but gather the wheat into my barn.
Matthew 13:30

Next time someone asks you if you were born in a barn, tell them "No, but I was reborn to live in one!"

Praise the Lord! AMEN!
