Matthew 12:22-30   Mark 3:20-30
The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #153-72718

22  Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
23  And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?
24  But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
25  And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
26  And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
27  And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.
28  But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.
29  Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.
30  He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.
Matthew 12:22-30

20  And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.
21  And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
22  And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.
23  And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?
24  And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
25  And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.
28  Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
29  But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:
30  Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.
Mark 3:20-30

We will be continuing in Luke as soon as we pick up the rest of Chapter 12 in Matthew and Chapter 3 in Mark. These verses contain the recording of Jesus’ response to the religious leaders’ accusations of false authority or demonic powers.
In our last study we will recall that Simon the Pharisee and the others in attendance at Simon's house were very attentive when Jesus allowed a known sinner to touch Him and lavish Him in perfume and tears and kisses. They also were quite astounded by His claim to be able to forgive sin.
This gave then grounds for serious accusations against Jesus in which they embellished to a great extent to make Jesus appear to be in league with the devil and to make themselves appear to be the holy servants and representatives of God by pointing this out to all who would hear.
As I have stated before, Religious practitioners have to accuse, belittle and berate everyone else to make themselves appear better and more worthy of respect and attention. They all claim to be children of God but their faith has been reduced to religious practices in order to claim righteousness among others. If this were not true we would not have so many religions with so many divisions within them.
Yah! Things haven't changed, have they!
Let's work through both of these recorded accounts to get a full view of this event.
Mark begins with giving us a general location which also puts this in the correct timeline of events. Jesus is still in His Galilean Ministry, North of Judea and Samaria.
20  And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.
21  And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
Mark 3:20-21
Word of the presence of Jesus and the power of the Kingdom of God spread quickly among believers and all who would believe among the people.
They would gather wherever He was to be healed physically and spiritually.
Think if you will what affect that would have on the scribes and Pharisees who had painted themselves to be so holy and righteous and close to God. There pride and arrogance were being crushed by all the attention and numbers of Jews who were choosing faith over religion. All of the strict adherence to the physical rules and regulations the religious elite promoted as a must be performed for God to bless them, was at risk of being cast off. All of the authority and notoriety they had built was being destroyed by the Words and miracles of Jesus.
Without laying hands on Jesus the only thing they could do was discredit and accuse Jesus of not being a prophet or the messiah. It was obvious Jesus was filled with the Spirit of God by the power and wisdom He displayed. But because He was not part of their sect, their organization or even denomination, if you will, He was accused of having a spirit that was not holy like the one they claimed as theirs.
Satan is a liar! One of the first things he teaches his disciples and servants to do is accuse the holy of un-holiness; accuse them who are Holy Spirit filled of being possessed with a spirit of evil. Religious hypocrites (aka Satan's disciples) are so holy and righteous that anyone doing anything different or even better must be accused of being exactly what they themselves really are! Do you see how blind the sin of arrogance can make a person? How low a person will stoop in the attempt to take and keep a position above others?
Jesus was not attempting to look better than anyone. He didn't even have to try! You cannot hide the truth of holiness and righteousness in a faithful and obedient servant of God. This is why the religious elite were so set on degrading and even removing Jesus from the public. What they worked so hard at pretending to be, Jesus was.
22  Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
23  And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?
Matthew 12:22-23
The people came not only to see Jesus and hear Him but to be healed and to have their loved ones healed.
Now I must point out that the Bible does not say that blindness and the inability to speak is cause by demon possession. It is saying that anyone can be a host for evil spirits and most certainly anyone who cannot resist them because of physical and mental impairment.
Jesus not only cast out the evil spirit, but healed that person even to the point of full sight and speaking ability. And all the people believe He was the promised messiah from the tribe of Judah, the son of David.
22  And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.
Mark 3:22
24  But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
Matthew 12:24
The Pharisees were obviously knowledgeable of the spirit realm. They knew of the devils servants and the results of demon possession. They had been faced with these things before. As a result they had within their organization, priests who were appointed to the position of exorcists. Whether they ever did cast out demons was never stated. However judging by the events surrounding the seven sons of Sceva, they were not ever very successful.
Even so because of their arrogance they would have certainly claimed to be.
They would have claimed to cast out demons because of their knowledge and professed authority as representatives of God. That meant to them that anyone else was not doing so by the same power and knowledge.
25  And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
26  And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
Matthew 12:25-26
23  And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?
24  And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
25  And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mark 3:23-26

Jesus spoke to them in parables.
Jesus gave them a series of questions in similitude.
First a kingdom divided against itself.
Second, a house divided against itself.
Third Satan against himself ------and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mark 3:23-26
Let’s look at these three examples.
Jesus began with the great expanse of a kingdom as an example. Quite simply a country that splits into separate sections with more than one ruler. They are both weaken and vulnerable to attack and captivity or demise. The Jewish leadership should have recognized this immediately just from their history.
A house divided against itself. Most people would think of the family as a household and that certainly is applicable, but Jesus has not reduced this down quite so quickly. He is still talking about the Jews as a whole.
The history of the Jews was always united they stand divided they fall.
The Jews represented the House of God but they would not be satisfied with God as their one and only King, so they demanded their own leadership which is how the Pharisees and the Sadducees came into power as religious leaders.
Third the Pharisees would never rise up against themselves. Their whole organization was built on painting themselves as united in holiness and righteousness. Internal strife would show what they really were and they would surely be diminished in power, if not eliminated. If there were differences and discrepancies they were handled privately and completely.
And so it is with Satan.
First we see Jesus stating----- if Satan rises up against himself---
That is to say if Satan casts out his own he would then be divided against himself. Being divided against oneself is like cutting off one’s body parts. A foot, an arm, an eye, a leg. Before long Satan would be so divided that he could not stand and would surely be defeated by the power of holiness in unity.
Oh but as we bring this truth into our present day and world in which we live; who is it that is divided and who is it that is united?
All facets of filthy, greedy, power hungry, fornicating, adulterous liars are clamoring over each other to overrun any resemblance of truth and justice and holiness. The church, the body of Christ is so divided it has no power to defend itself as a whole.
Before we proceed with this thought we need to cover a very stinging and pointed comment to the religious leaders by Jesus.
27  And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.
Matthew 12:27
Jesus is saying to the scribes and Pharisees, (and I paraphrase) "If it is Satan that casts out Satan's own then it must be Satan in your exorcists that does the same. So if your own are filled with Satan's will then they have proven who you really serve." ---Ouch!
28  But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.
Matthew 12:28
The religious leadership was caught in their own accusation. Jesus had turned their lie back on them. Now surely they would not admit to being Satan's servants. So if they cast out demons by faith in God then so did Jesus.
Except they were not able to do what Jesus was able to do and that is why they falsely accused Him.
Jesus not only set them back on their heels, He explained why He was able to cast out devils and heal the blind and the dumb.
27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.
Mark 3:27
29  Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.
Matthew 12:29
Satan is the strong man. The strong mans house is this world we live in that was defiled by sin. We are talking about every filthy thought and action which includes unbelief and blatant denial of God. It also is the reason we suffer from sickness and disease and debilitating handicaps like blindness and deafness and physical deformities. They are all Satan's goods!
But in order to remove or take Satan's good's out of his possession Satan must first be subdued by a greater power.
I believe we will stop there for now and resume our study in our next sermon.
Praise the Lord there is so much to cover and learn.
Be blessed in all you do in His service.
AMEN!
