The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #112-21818

26  Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
Luke 6:26
As we look at our text for this fine Lord's Day, it may seem to be an afterthought added at the end of one's recitation. However, if we take a moment to look back several verses we will see Luke is giving the outcome, stated by Jesus, for not being a faith filled disciple, minister and evangelist of the Word of God.
Verses 24-25 are stating the outcome or opposite of verse 21. So with just a glance we can see that verse 26 is the outcome or the opposite of verses 22-23
So as we begin our study for this portion of Scripture I would like to reintroduce verses 22-23 of Luke 6, that we may be refreshed to a fuller understanding.
22  Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
23  Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
Luke 6:22-23
   Our Text for today reads:
26  Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
Luke 6:26
Now to many this may seem confusing or this may seem to proof of their work.
Let me explain.
We have in the world today hundreds of thousands of preachers of the Gospel.
We also have thousands of different variations of the Gospel being preached.
Often times the differences are minor but they are differences stemming from disagreements and disunity. Each one however claims to be correct in their interpretation looking for recognition and approval from a larger number of listeners. There are even groups of these practitioners choosing to name themselves as being different in their beliefs. This is where we find division by denomination. Each group or denomination seeks to be the most popular and prominent. They claim to be preaching and teaching the Word of God and claim fellowship with all Christians yet insist on separating themselves by their differences of interpretation of the Word of God.
Unity in the body does not come from disunity in belief.
Naming a church for people to locate is not the same as posting the name of the organizational influence to the preaching within. If we look in the Word of God we see Paul writing to the churches. He did not write to the Baptist Church at one location and the Methodist Church at another. He wrote letters to the Church of the followers of the Word of God and his letters were written to be copied and circulated to all the churches in different areas. Why; because there were no differences in the doctrine being preached. There were no differences in teaching or interpretation of the scriptures, which were actually being written in Paul's letters and by the rest of the New Testament writers.
Paul did however write a letter of admonition to the church at Corinth because they had adopted pagan practices into their worship services. They had begun to practice the pagan ritual of speaking in unknown languages and claiming they were in closer communion with God because they were gifted or blessed above other men. Sound familiar? Yah, nothing changes!
In Chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation we see the command of a letter being written to the churches in different locations; each church, being named by location and admonished or praised for their separation from or adherence to the truth of the Word of God. The outcome would be that all of the churches would be the same in faith and obedience; fitly joined, as one in all things. Not all walking in different directions or wandering off to follow their own administrations.
Jesus Christ is the head of the Church and the Church is His body. All are in different locations but all are under one head. All are made of many fitly joined God fearing disciples ministers and evangelists, all preaching and teaching the same truth in the Word of God. Each having a special purpose in the plan of service to the head, but all being exactly the same in doctrine. Six of the churches named in Revelation were being admonished individually for their unique unholy practices.
However, any number of the rest would have received the same admonishment for the same unholy practices. The point is they should have all been like the Church at Philadelphia; holding true to faith in the Word. The truth in and of the Word, not a whitewashed or perverted version of the Word.
Leaving one location to go to the next should have been the only difference. The church or body of believers should be the same, no matter how many smaller groups or houses of worship were in that area. You see there is only one truth to every Word in the Bible. Adhering to that truth is the only form of unity that is in the body of Christ.
What happens when every house of worship begins to teach exactly the same thing? Not one is greater than another. Not one is more popular than another. Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone is taught and praised and worshiped and studied and served. The Church is all about Jesus or should be!
Now, I’m sure there are some who will say well I can do that know! I can go to any town in the U.S. and find a Baptist Church or a Methodist Church or any number of different organized denominations but therein lays the problem.
Each claims to be practitioners of holiness and righteousness yet they all strive to be the biggest and best in every location. They all seek the attention, praise, support and attendance for the glory of the organization. If they were in fact true disciples, ministers, and evangelists of the Word of God, all of the pastors would be meeting to study the exact truth in every Word and would be preaching that truth with no differences whatsoever! They would study the Bible together as one to be one with Christ and His disciples. The Glory goes to God through Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit of Truth in every Word of the Bible!
Now some of you may think I have wandered way off course here but the truth is I'm right on it! Right smack dab in the well lighted path of the Word of God!
26  Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
Luke 6:26
This world we live in thrives on approval ratings, popularity and notoriety.
Proof that the church has fallen to become a willing participant of such practices is in the very fact there are so many different denominations and beliefs in the world today. Each one clamoring and declaring to be right in their beliefs and practices while using worldly numbers and approval ratings to justify their doctrine and practices.
Jesus Christ is admonishing the church here.
Now, one would say, "No, Jesus is talking to each of us individually!"
Yes, He is, but the church is you! You are the church being joined together with others who are the church to build the living temple of God. So when I speak of the church I am speaking of you, the group you practice your religion with and the organization which that group chooses to glorify with their adherence to their doctrine and practices.  If the church is doing wrong then obviously the people who make up that church are doing wrong because they are the church!
So when Jesus says; Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you; He is speaking to all men individually and collectively.
The proof of sin from this verse is that men would speak well of you above others like you. Why should one devote Christian be praised above another? Why should one preacher or denominations teaching be praised above another?
You see if they were all teaching and preaching the same thing there would be no better than thou denominations or preachers. There would only be Jesus, the living Word of God.
We should all be very afraid of religious organizations who work to build attendance and popularity and notoriety with advertising and activities designed to make the public take notice above other religious organizations. Let's simplify this.
1  Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it:------
Psalms 127:1
We are talking about each and every individual disciple, minister and evangelist that walks with the Holy Spirit of Truth in them. They walk by the Word with no doctrinal divisions. When there is only one being glorified then there is only one receiving the attention of men. When Jesus is the head of the church, He is the only one receiving the praise and honor and glory. Not the organization or the denomination or religion or even the pastor. Who would get the praise of men if they were all the same in Christ? Christ alone gets the glory!
Every single person who preaches for notoriety is attempting to set up His own throne before men. Any person or persons who preach for the notoriety of an organization is attempting to assist that organization to set up a throne before men. Any organization including modern denominations who attempt to become greater by worldly standards is setting up a throne before men. They are lifting themselves to be a door or passage for pilgrims to pass. They strive for notoriety to be bigger and better and more able in the handling of the Word of God when in truth they are attempting to be gods themselves. They want to be the door to heaven instead of a bearer of the Light on the path to Jesus.
Don't get me wrong. I am not condemning church organizations. However, I do believe this verse condemns the desire for these organizations to take the Word of God and use it to create a different group of believers; people who will devote their time and money to a doctrine that suites them.
All Christians should be taught the same thing; the simple truth in every living Word of God. We are not called to be known by any other name but Christian.
A Christ one! A child of God, saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ! AMEN!
Be very afraid of the glory men give to religious groups or their leaders.
Persecution will come against all Christians. But praise from men is a very scary foe to face. It is easy for men to praise men and even easier for men to accept praise from men.
I once publicly gave praise to a very special friend and pastor for helping me to begin my work in the ministry. He immediately point up and shouted "Praise the Lord!"
I replied " Amen. Praise the Lord for all of His faithful servants."
You see God gets all the glory because God gave all of His glory, for us, in His Son Jesus Christ.
8  I am the Lord: that is my name:
and my glory will I not give to another,
neither my praise to graven images.
Isaiah 42:8
Our glory is in heaven with our Savior. It is His glory we will walk in as faithful disciples, ministers and evangelists here and now.
19  But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19
Listen brothers and sisters, this is a warning against division for the purpose of approval, popularity and notoriety. It is a warning against doctrinal differences that creates sectarianism. Division creates sects that rely on the approval and support of followers. It is proof you are teaching something different than everyone else because men support you in doing so. They choose your doctrine over another when there should be no difference!
There should be only praise for God because you teach the same thing as the next preacher in the next house of worship. Persecution comes to the faithful servant of God. Praise should only go to the Lord!
