Matthew 5:7    Luke 6:36
The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #106-2418

7  Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Matthew 5:7
36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
Luke 6:36
    Blessed are the merciful:
In our studies of the Beatitudes I will continue to promote the truth in these scriptures for all who believe they are disciples of Jesus.
This is not to point out you are not but rather to fortify what a true disciple is and does and strives after. This is a study to encourage every believer to a greater spiritual understanding and help cut away false ideas and teachings.
A disciple of Jesus is all of these attributes because they are holy before God.
There is no sin in the spiritual attitude of being poor in spirit, mournful, meek, hungering and thirsting for righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, and peacemakers.
These are all holy before God and every true disciple will be holy because God is holy. These were and are all attributes of Jesus Christ and every person who answers the call of the Holy Spirit to salvation through faith in our Lord Jesus. Everyone who puts on the new man in salvation immediately puts on Christ. He is the mantel that we wear.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Romans 13:14
26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.
27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:26-28
Please understand, the beatitudes are a guideline, a teaching and instructing tool for every disciple of Jesus. We are all one in Christ! Do you see any division of any kind there? Do you see any strength for some and lack for others?
Do you see, this is meant to be the whole of every disciple being joined with all other disciples walking with the same attributes with the same attitudes, glorifying God by His provisions for their ordained service?
Every disciple is called to serve for and in the glory of God. No disciples service is the same as another. However each disciple is the same in Jesus Christ and here in the beatitudes we see what a true disciple is. It would do us all great justice to study the attributes and spiritual attitudes Jesus is proclaiming to be in every disciple who rises to walk in His righteousness.
To many, righteousness becomes that arrogant better than thou attitude we see in so many religions; and yes, even denominations today.
But true righteousness is walking in humble servitude by the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit for the Glory of God. It is not proclaiming to be anything greater than anyone else yet the presence of Jesus Christ in us proclaims what you are in Him.
36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
Luke 6:36
Oh my beloved brother, how merciful is our God who gave His own Son to be a sacrifice for our wretched souls.
8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
God who cannot even look upon sin sent His only begotten Son to die on a cross, suffering and dying for our sin. We did not deserve to be given even hope of salvation. We can do nothing to earn or even want salvation in our own way or works. Salvation is only through faith in Jesus Christ.
16  So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
Romans 9:16
Mercy is most often defined as not giving someone something they do deserve.
We as sinners all deserve death. But we are given eternal life through faith in God's merciful gift.
23  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:23
That explains God's mercy toward every person who will believe in the substitutionary death of Jesus, for us.
But our scripture is talking about that same type of life giving mercy from us to others. You see mercy is also the giving of yourself for others in need.
If you truly desire to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, you will be called to give your life for the lost as well as lifting and teaching new believers.
Jesus taught believers while giving His life in obedience for all mankind.
The reason Luke and Matthew say the same thing without saying it the same way is they are talking about a heartfelt spiritual mercy for all mankind.
Look at how Luke presents this verse.
Be as our merciful Father in Heaven is merciful to you.
God gave of Himself so you could live with Him. He sacrificed His Son, the living Word of God, that we may be washed clean in the blood of that one and only righteous sinless Lamb. The Lamb of God, Jesus Christ.
Hear me! God did not give us what we deserved. No, He gave us what we didn't deserve. That's called grace!
Mercy is, loving others so much that you would give your life for their salvation.
There are many acts of mercy toward the body, as in sharing and giving for the physical needs of people. Helping anyone who is in need truly shows the heart of the disciple. However, what is the ultimate need of every person in this world?
The ultimate need is to hear the Gospel and see the truth of Jesus walking and working in and through you. Just handing things out to people will help them temporarily but to give them the truth about salvation through faith in Jesus Christ is giving them everything they need spiritually. It is giving your life to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ because you want everyone who will believe, to come because of God's sweet Mercy.
The true disciple shows true mercy for all mankind when he sacrifices His life for the lost, to be saved. It is when he devotes himself to the lead of the Holy Spirit in ministry and evangelism because he is able to see past the physical needs to the spiritual needs of this dead and dying world. You see the true disciple is already raised by grace through faith because of God's mercy. The true disciples understands how merciful God was to him personally, because he has come to the realization of just how sin filled he was and is. Repentance is the crushing realization of just how filled with the lies of Satan we are and have been born into.
Even living as a good person by modern standards or by some religious standards; when the eyes of our hearts are opened to the truth of what we really are in the sight of God then and only then can we begin to understand how merciful God is toward us. God has mercy for all men even without knowing and believing in Jesus Christ. How do we know?
      Once again,
8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
So the pinnacle of mercy in a disciple is to "commendeth" or to show, prove, establish or exhibit the same love toward the lost in this world we live in.
God gave Jesus His Son, the living Word of God for all to hear, and believe that they may be saved and live with Him in the heavenly places, forever.
We are ordained as servants of God, disciples, ministers and evangelists all, to do the same; to give this dead and dying world the Gospel. The living Word of God for all to hear, and believe, that they may be saved and live with Him in the heavenly places, forever. Being merciful is having a heart for all to come to Christ.
7  Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Matthew 5:7
Matthew says the same thing only different. That may sound like an oxymoron but it's not. Matthew records the blessing because of the attribute and attitude of the truly merciful disciple. One who is merciful. One who is spiritually merciful toward the lost.
Once again we see Jesus proclaiming the blessing is already been spoken and is in order for the merciful. The word "are" is implied and shows the existence of blessing for the merciful.
Remember, heart condition leads to action. We say "if you have a heart for something you are extremely passionate and active in and for whatever you are consumed with." Being merciful is far more than being active in helping people with basic needs. Don't get me wrong! I commend every living soul who reaches out to fill the physical needs of any and all. But our scripture is far more outreaching and purposeful than basic needs.
A soul that is merciful will obtain mercy.
This is not to say you must be merciful in some form to receive mercy from God. We have already established mercy from God has been shown to all men as sinners.
Mercy was shown and given through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the sin of the world. No, this is the mercy shown by God becoming part of every true disciple.
That is the obtaining.
Before I gave my life to Jesus Christ, I didn't care who read the Bible and certainly didn't ever think about preaching the Gospel. I thought I was a Christian because that's what my parents said we were and although I was quite knowledgeable about the Bible I never understood what a wretched sinner I was in God's eyes and or just believing in God or that Jesus died for our sin did not mean I was saved. I believed what the Bible said but did not understand how it applied to me. When I came to the full realization of who I really was in the sight of God and that He loved me so much anyway, that He gave His own Sons life for me, then I repented unto faith and confessed unto salvation. When I was forgiven I was immediately ushered into the arms of Jesus and washed in His blood and filled with His Spirit as a promise of who I had become and what was to be mine. What a glorious moment in my life! How I desire and pray and work for everyone to live that truth and experience the breath of God filling their lost and dying souls.
------ for they shall obtain mercy.
Matthew 5:7
When you are saved you come to the recognition of God's Mercy for you. You are blessed with that mercy when you come to Christ, for He is our mercy.
Having mercy for others is having a need for others to know Jesus Christ. It is, desiring others to come in repentance unto faith and give their lives to Jesus that they also may be filled with the life giving Breath of God.
Having mercy for others is spiritual as God's mercy for us is spiritual.
When you rise above just the physical needs of people, to their spiritual needs and give yourself for them, then you have obtained mercy. You have the mercy of God ------as your Father also is merciful.
Luke 6:36
You see, just being saved is not discipleship. By all of my understanding of who and what we are in Christ when we are truly saved, I can assure you, if you do not have a deep and powerful desire to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, your claim to salvation is highly questionable. If you do not hunger and thirst for the Word of God and cry because there are so many in this world today who do not know Him, you need to question yourself.
Have I just accepted what the Bible says as believing I'm saved?
Or have I given myself to live for Jesus Christ?
There is a great difference between just believing something is true and living with a passion for that truth to become truth for everyone.
Are you just saved or are you passionate?
Are you a questionable Christian or a devoted disciple, minister and evangelist of the Word of God?
Do you live with a name tag that professes your faith or do you live with the presence of God by His Spirit proclaiming the life of Jesus in and through you?
Disciples are blessed with having the passion of Christ as there mantel. They have obtained the mercy of God and live to share Him.
