The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #104-12818

Matthew 5:5

5  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are the meek in spirit.                                              Remember these are spiritual blessings that do, can and will translate into tangible blessing. So as each blessing begins spiritually so too the attribute or spiritual attitude of the true disciple.
     Meek in spirit.
We have only to look at our Lord and savior to see and understand the true meaning of meek in spirit.
29  The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
John 1:29
Within this single verse we can hear the voice of God thundering through the words of John the Baptist.
Look, look all who will! There is the Lamb of God; the meek and innocent, perfectly humble and subservient Son of God. You would not notice Him to be different from any other Jew but for the purpose He was sent, the works that He will do by the presence of God in and with Him. He has been ordained----  Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
Ephesians 4:8
It was this servant of God who walked among men in humility and obedience that worked in all of the power and guidance of God by His Spirit. Jesus never argued with unbelievers. He never chased them down or went rattling their door knobs to see if someone would listen to what He had to say. No, he quietly and obediently went from place to place speaking the truth of God's Word, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God and working in the power of God in Him.
     Did he get angry? Yes.
He made whips and drove out the money changers from His Father’s house of worship.
14  And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
15  And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
16  And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.
John 2:14-16
Does this fit in your impression or knowledge of someone who is meek?
It should!
We'll come back to this point in a bit.
In verse 5 of Matthew 5 we see once again the blessing that has already been spoken into existence and is applied to every true disciple of Jesus along with the rest of the Holy attributes of true discipleship. Each blessing is different however, as are the attributes, each blessing is part of the whole blessing.
Blessed are the meek---Now we must begin to define what a meek child of God is.
In our modern standards of thinking the word meek has become more associated with the term introvert. Someone who shy's away, doesn't cause trouble, doesn't want to be noticed and would rather lie down or be pushed around then stand up for what is right.
That is a very skewed and incorrect definition of meek as we can well determine from the life of our Lord and Savior.
Many times our Lord walked away from impending danger from the religious leadership and the ever helpful Herodian’s. But He did not hide. He continued His work in spite of their threats, challenges and attempts to discredit and remove Him before His time.
Jesus only challenged them to think and question themselves and their faith.
He made them look at their motives and the scriptures for proof.
As you grow in knowledge of the truth in and of the Word of God you will become more and more at peace with yourself in Christ. Anger and violent tendencies, even raising your voice to someone will just seem to fade away. You will discover the power of calmly and peacefully speaking the truth and then walking away.
It will always be the defiant of the truth that will resort to a physical strategy of proving they are correct in their beliefs. They will raise their voices with threats and curses, they will push and shove, even strike out at the bearer of Good News or they will gather together with other non-believers to form a greater number proving in their minds they are correct in their beliefs. But in all of this they will recognize the child of God still walks above them because God is with them. The truth of God can be refused, even driven away, but it cannot be refuted.
Pride brings boasting and violence. Humility brings meekness.
Jesus did not raise His voice or become argumentative. When the people even tried to lay hands on Him, in the power of God, He just walked away. But He did not walk away from His ministry. He went on to increase.
Here we see the blessing of righteousness in the disciple of Jesus Christ. It is the righteousness of Jesus the disciple walks in and standing in that righteousness is glorifying God. When you stand for what is right, God gives you more to do in that righteousness for His glory. God gives the increase.
7  So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
1 Corinthians 3:7
The meek disciple does not force his ministry on anyone but he also does not cease or hide his ministry. We are to be bold in the righteousness of our Lord.
1  The wicked flee when no man pursueth:
but the righteous are bold as a lion.
Proverbs 28:1
You see, being meek is not hiding from being seen and known as a disciple, minister and evangelist of the Word of God. It is walking and standing in the truth.
Most often people who will disagree with the truth will do the running. Satan is not able to stand against the Word of God. His disciples will flee before they will challenge you when you carry the sword of the Word of God.
My Dad used to say, "Walk softly and carry a Big Stick."
Truth can be refused, and the most frequent method of refusal used by the lost, (them who are filled with unclean spirits,) is to flee. They follow their hearts in this unclean world. They refuse to hear the truth, or run away from the truth, so they cannot be wrong in their own thinking and beliefs. Everything Satan has filled their hearts and minds with keeps them from knowing the truth.
True disciples of Jesus Christ will always face contention but standing in the truth will always prevail. We are called to suffer as our Lord and Savior. As we study the ministry of Jesus we will understand the resistance He suffered. Why should we not experience the same resistance? It's the same devil working the same way for the same goals through all who will follow him.
2  But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.
1 Thessalonians 2:2
So here we gather in our definition of being meek in our discipleship means to be bold without being forceful. There is a big difference between standing in righteousness and truth, and trying to shove it down someone's throat. It is the Holy Spirit that calls the lost to come and hear. We are just the messengers.
We are called to be ready at all times to preach the Word.
2  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
3  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
5  But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
2 Timothy 4:2-5
Even as we are called to meekness in our walk after the Lord, we are never to allow the obvious desecration of God's holiness.
16  And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.
John 2:16
Returning to our earlier scripture reference we see the meek rising against the works of desecration. This can be anything from defacing church property, using a sanctified location for personal gain or using the sanctity of fellowship and worship for personal gain. A house of worship is for the giving of oneself to God. When men turn a house of worship into gaining for oneself because of God, that is when the meek need to rise up and cast them out. When the servants of Satan raise their hands against a symbol of the presence of God and His holiness, the meek should rise up to stop them as quickly as possible.
The meek walk in quiet servitude while rising in the guidance and strength of God by His Spirit in them. They force no one to listen or believe, yet are diligent and persistent to preach the Gospel and answer all questions and challenges with the truth of the Word of God. In faith they accept all challenges knowing God will protect them and lead them through for a greater service and a greater end.
5  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5
Notice it does not say inherit the world.
The physical earth as God’s creation.
The world is a reference to all that is upon the earth. Men and all of their thoughts and creations are of the world, but the earth belongs to God and all of His disciples who walk in the lighted path of Jesus Christ are no longer of the world but are joined with Christ in the Kingdom of God. Spiritually they live with Christ in Christ. Physically they walk with each other among the lost of the world.
Think if you will; was Jesus the Son of God as He walked among men on earth? Most assuredly!
Are you as a blood bought, born again, Spirit filled, believer of Jesus Christ also a child of God? Most assuredly!
Therefore as a child of God are you a member of the household of God in heaven and not a member of the world of unregenerate man on earth?
The world is what Satan through sin in man has made earth to be. It is where men cohabitate until they die. But when Satan is cast down and our Lord and savior returns to be seated on His throne, we as His disciples will rule with Him.
10  But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
2 Peter 3:10
13  Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
2 Peter 3:13
I would like to draw your attention to three words in the first three promises of blessing from God to His faithful Disciples of Christ.
3  Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4  Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:3-5
Verse 3 uses the word "is." ---theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Present tense is always now.
Verse 4 uses the word "be" or in the fuller meaning "be being."
Present with a continuous action. “Be” points to the article which is comforted. Because our mourning will not end until we are with our Lord and savior in Heaven our comforting will be continuous until we are glorified with Him.
Verse 5 uses the word "inherit."
Used in the present future. God has promised Heaven and earth to all who will believe with their hearts and confess with their mouth the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior. The inheritance God has promised is yours now and will be received in due time. That does not mean it is a blessing held for later. No, as a true disciple, you all ready have full membership of that inheritance just as you have full membership of the family of God in the Heavenly Kingdom of God. As a born again Christian you are a member of the Kingdom of God even though you do not yet physically live there. So is the inheritance of the earth. No one yet lives on the new earth where in dwelleth the righteousness of the Lord. (ref 2 Peter 3:13)
Blessed is every true disciple; for they shall live in the righteousness of God's creation and not the unrighteousness man has created because of sin.
A world with no sin on an earth made for the sinless.
What the children of God will inherit is what Adam and Eve lost.
