The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #344-6121            Matthew 19:2-12    Mark 10:2-12

2  And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
3  The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
4  And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5  And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6  Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
7  They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
8  He saith unto them,   Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
9  And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
10  His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
11  But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
12  For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.
Matthew 19:2-12
2  And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.
3  And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?
4  And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.
5  And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.
6  But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7  For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
8  And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
9  What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
10  And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.
11  And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.
12  And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.
Mark 10:2-12

So we have officially returned to Matthew in our Study of the Gospels in Harmony.  Some of you may be wondering why we jump from one to the other in taking the lead for study but the answer is quite simple. We are following Jesus through His ministry and each writer was unique in covering different portions of that ministry as well as the same portions.
That is why we may be in Luke or John for an extended period of time as they were the only ones to record a certain time period. While other times it may be all four giving us record of the same event or all four giving us the same teaching from different time periods in Jesus' Ministry. As I have said before, Jesus taught the same things over and over throughout His ministry among men.
So let's begin once again in Matthew Chapter 19.
1  And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
2  And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
Matthew 19:1-2
In our last study in Luke we saw the Disciples rebuking the parents who brought their infants to Jesus to be blessed. And here in Matthew we see why. Great multitudes followed Him and He healed them.
Notice it says He healed them, the great multitudes. This is what Jesus did everywhere He went except where people did not believe in Him. Jesus healed the multitudes. So when the parents of healthy little children came to Jesus the disciples began to shoo them away as it seemed to them they were taking up vital time from Jesus' healing ministry. As we learned Jesus was blessing everyone with His love that we all need and need to give as well as receive.
Think about what these people were seeing in Jesus. Here was a man that cared so much for everyone that He was willing to speak to them on a personal level, touch them that needed His healing hand and teach all who wanted to know about Him and why He was so loving and caring toward them. It was certainly nothing like the Religious leaders they knew and were supposed to honor and believe. What a refreshing change.
Well folks, it is still a refreshing change. It is still a healing experience and it is still a love that you will find nowhere else. In the early days of this country, America, people endured many hardships just to get away from the crushing religious rules they were made to bow too. They bucked the system and came to a free land to worship God and not religion.
At one time this was one Nation under God but as we know Satan will not rest until he fills the pews and pulpits with any and every variation of the simple truth. He will not rest until there is division of every kind among so called God fearing Christians. And how does He achieve that?
He counterfeits love. He changes the meaning, the true definition, and lies about the founder and creator of love. Satan makes love a feeling that comes and goes and can be made by humans.
Let's get something straight right now!
You can have love, you can share love and you can give love but you cannot make love! God is love!
Love is eternal for them that have and know true love.
You can succumb to lust and call it love. But it will not last because it is one of Satan's greatest lies.
8  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
1 John 4:8
If the love you have for anyone is not a binding love than you do not know the love God has for you.
12  No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
1 John 4:12
When people are deceived by Satan, Love becomes a passing thing. How many times have you heard people say they fell in love and then fell back out? Their love is passing away as time goes by. They don’t share the same love with someone that they used too. Well that is because they never knew Gods love for them and lived it for others. This is why divorce is so acceptable today. When lust begins to wane for one it must be satisfied with another. Sin is a never ending presence that must be fed and never stops growing until it is confessed and repented of in faith that the love of Christ is the answer.
For God so loved the world, (John 3:16); that is a love that is filled with commitment. God did not fall out of love with the world. He loved this world He created to be at peace and harmony so much that even after everything Satan has done to turn it against Him, He gave His eternal Word that it would be His forever. You and I are loved so much that even while we were lost in sin God’s love through the gift of life in Jesus Christ was made perfect. God has always known us. From the beginning of creation God has known us and every sin in our lives. But He loved us so much He gave His Word, Jesus to be our salvation from eternal damnation in sin. That is a love the world does not know. Only those who know God through Christ Jesus know what a love with total commitment really is.
So when Jesus begins to explain to the Pharisees’ by the Word of God, that God created a man and a woman to have the love for each other that He has for them, they are taken by surprise.
Now let’s take these verses and dig into them as they apply to us today.
First we have God creating the perfect and only acceptable union and that is between a man and a woman. Point blank, no exceptions, I do not need to say anything else!
It is Gods will for us to be joined in holy matrimony.
Matrimony is the state of marriage or being joined for life. Holy Matrimony is the joining of a man and a woman in the sight and love of God. There are many people being married everyday but few are being joined in holy matrimony. Just having a wedding in a church with a minister performing the ceremony is far from Holy Matrimony. Holy Matrimony is the spiritual joining of two to become one. This is what Jesus is saying in verse 5 of our text. It is not the ceremony, who performs it or even the location. It is the joining of two hearts to be one in the sight and for the glory of God. It is a promise made with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit as witnesses to the joining of one man and one woman in marriage.                                                                                    When a man and a woman are joined in love, the love of God through Jesus Christ, they become one in God. They are joined forever in Holy Matrimony. They are not two; they are one bound in God through faith in Christ Jesus.
We are all one in Christ, but a man and a woman are one in Christ in marriage. This is so simple folks. How can anyone say they are a Christian who has given their life to Christ and then treat their spouse like stale bread? How can a person confess Christ as their Lord and Savior and then treat Him like stale bread? Your wife or husband should be as much a part of you as your Lord and Savior. Total devotion, love and forgiveness is what God has for everyone in Christ and that is what we are to have for our spouse in Christ also.
There is no second thought, no sin and no divorce in Gods’ love.
Is that the kind of love you honor God with toward His Son and your spouse? Do you live to be closer to God and your wife or husband every day? Remember, how you treat your spouse is how you treat God. You promised God they would be your one and only till death do you part. A broken promise to your spouse is a broken promise to God.
We will stop there for now.
Our most gracious Heavenly Father, make us to see that you love for us is holy and pure and never ending. Make us to see that our love for our wives and husbands and families should be the same love. It should be your love shining through us and back to you. Help us to grow in the truth of your Word. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN!
