Romans 2:5-11  Sermon #9-21713  (RW9520)

And to every man will come; the revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

Verse 5 assures us there is no escape from the judgment of God.
Good or bad, reward or punishment God’s judgment will be swift.                                                                                                                               Malachi 3:5
And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness -------saith the LORD of hosts.

So what are we judged for?                                                               Paul explains it is one’s heart condition that stirs us to do the deeds of righteousness or unrighteousness.
5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;                                                                                                                                                                                                         6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:                                                 7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:                                                                     8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,                                                              9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;                                                                                          10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:                                                                                            11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

Verse 6 is where we will begin and may even be there when we end this morning.
Without a full understanding of every man and his deeds, once again we have the tendency to read on and say "well I’m not as bad as those described in verse 8 so I must be a verse 7 person and should receive the blessing of verse 10.
Oh, how we glorify ourselves in our own minds.
We have only to go back to Sermon #7 to see Paul lists the more serious offenses against God but implies the lesser with the words he uses. Here Paul uses the words (every and deeds) so his statement includes even the simplest of sins against God.
These are the sins that:
• Keep today’s Christians from walking in the power of God.
• Keep today’s Christians from seeing through believing.
• Keep today’s Christians counting their money instead of their blessings.
6 Who will render?---- God will render.
To render is to; inflict as retribution, to repay (for good or bad).
Retribution is to re-tribute.
In the Old Testament nations that had been conquered or chose not to fight against a greater power paid tribute to that greater power. If they refused or paid a substandard tribute, the greater  power would repay them with the sword. A just retribution.
As Christian’s our lives have been spared the horror of eternal separation from our Just and Holy God by His Grace.
So how do we pay tribute to our Lord and Savior?
With faith AND obedience.
James says: 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Now, James makes it clear Obedient Faith is Saving Faith.
First we must understand Faith is obedience.
They cannot be separate.

• By faith were we not obedient to answer the call of the Holy Spirit?
• By faith were we not obedient to leave the old man behind at the moment we came to the cross?
• By faith were we not obedient to remain in Christ’s presence that we may walk and serve in His Power through His Spirit.
2 out of 3 doth not a Christian make!

Remaining in the presence of Christ is seeing by believing.
The world says; “don’t visualize what can be done by faith in God the creator and sustainer of all things!
Reality is where your power is! Only believe what you see!”
• The world does NOT want you seeing through believing.
• The world does NOT want Christians to walk in the power of God.
• The world does NOT want a church that is known for its deeds through obedient faith.
You can always recognize disobedient faith when someone says,  “I do believe, but-----“
Believing only what one sees is no faith at all!

Once again James makes it clear:
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
And the result;
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
Our text says:
6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
Are we beginning to catch the severity of even the simplest of sins?
The simplest of sins is not using the first thing God gives us and that is our faith.
Romans 12:3                                                                                          3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
And what is the retribution for not using that faith, even the smallest amount of faith given to His servants.
Matthew 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.                                                                                                          Luke 19: 27 But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’”
Even not doing what is righteous is unrighteousness in the sight of God.
• Not walking in the power of God is no walk at all!
• Not seeing by believing is no faith at all!
• Counting your money instead of your blessings is no recognition of God at all!
These are some of the simplest of offenses that are being stored up against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

Now do we dare to continue to glorify ourselves in our own minds?
Do we dare look at what we have instead of what we are promised?

Are we looking through the glass more clearly?
Are we humbling ourselves to spiritual reality instead of boasting in worldly reality?

6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
For the last 2 years I have been preaching the same message.
Faith and Obedience
It starts at the cross and never ends for the true disciple!

A deed is another word for WORK!
The only work that God will ever recognize is the work He does through us by His work in us.
And it starts with obedient faith.

“So tell us pastor, just what is obedient faith?”
Matthew 7:7
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
Matthew 21:22
And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”
John 15:16
You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.

Fruit is the word for evidence in the New Testament.
Evidence of what?

Your deeds or your works are the outward visible evidence of the power of God within you.
Once again it’s not the work you are capable of doing in your own wisdom and ability while attaching God’s name to it.
It is the work that God does in you and through you for His glory.
God has no glory in the capably financed or highly staffed or sufficiently qualified.
His glory comes when we humble ourselves before our creator and sustainer and commit to a walk of never ending faith and obedience.

Let’s go back and read the last 3 verses we used to verify this point. What is the common denominator?
• Asking Glorifies God.
• Asking humbles you and lifts Him.
• Asking means you believe He is the giver of all things.
• Asking is being obedient to His Word.
Now ASK yourself “why do we not see God’s mighty hand working through the church today.”

Individually and corporately God renders impotence to those of little faith and the scarcely obedient.  A just retribution.
• You will have no power to walk for God.
• You will not see His work performed through you.
• Your deeds will neither glorify God or His church.

6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds
Please remember reward and punishments begin immediately.   Malachi 3:5
And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness -------saith the LORD of hosts.
Retribution for faith and obedience is reward.
You cannot out give God.
The more Obedient Faith the more He prepares to give.
The more we ASK in His will the more He gives.

6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds
Now, the opposite view of this verse has become the light in the darkness.
But to view it only is still sin.
This verse should lighten the hearts of all who choose to see by believing; every man who chooses faith and obedience above the worldly view of reality.
Oh yes, the bell tolls and the angels sing as we rejoice in our Lord for the truth in His Word.
Cast off your chains, rise above the swamp of despond and walk the upward path of faith and obedience to be rendered God glorifying rewards according to your deeds.
