Romans 4:9-12
Romans Sermon #29-7314  (RW-11521)
Good Morning,
I would like to thank everyone that is a visitor to this ministry, whether first time or continuous, for taking the time, spending your God given time, reading and studying Gods Word through this website.  We have thousands of visitors every year with nearly twice as many sermons being viewed.
All of our visitors are online from all over the world. We have no need for a physical meeting place because God has blessed us to meet through the internet, anytime, anywhere. We have no membership as an organization, only unity as a body in Christ.                                                            Pass the Word to someone, anyone, and tell them they can come to church right here, anytime they please. Thank You.

I would like to continue our study in Romans this morning and as we open with our text from Romans 4:9-12 we need to think about who Paul is talking to.
Paul is now talking to his Jewish brethren over his gentile brethren. Still talking to both but being sure there is a clear understanding that legalism and relation have nothing to do with salvation.
He is trying to draw the Jews down from a haughty heir-ship attitude while assuring the gentiles they are in no way less saved or brothers in Christ.
And while speaking to the Jews he is also directly speaking to the Gentiles making sure they know the Law came through the Jews and without the Law they would not know they are sinners as everyone else, including the Jews and are in need of salvation through Jesus Christ.
This is Paul leveling the playing field.                                               This is Paul putting every man in the same box marked --------"Not Better Than Thou".                                           This is Paul proclaiming salvation for all through faith and obedience in Christ Jesus.
     Let's begin with our text for today;
9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed to them also:
12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
In our last sermon we learned that blessedness is Gods favor toward us. We are His favorites when we choose to walk with Him, when we choose to follow His Word and when we treat each other as God loves each of us. We are Gods favorite when we humble ourselves as Jesus did, giving our body and soul to God for His glory.
9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
So Paul is speaking to the Roman church, Jews and Gentiles alike. Of course the Jews would know that circumcision was something they were expected to have. It was the outward sign of being a child of God. It was commanded of the Jews to show they were separated unto God. But it did not make them righteous in the sight of God. Obedience in the flesh does not save anyone.
You can be the most loving, caring, charitable person there is but that will not save you. It is faith in Christ Jesus that cuts away the sin in your heart. It’s the love of God through faith in Jesus that cuts away all that is not of Him that you may be not only seen but known as a child of God.
The Jews were separated to God by obedience to the Law but they were still not deemed righteous in the sight of God without faith.
Abraham was not circumcised when he was deemed righteous by God. It was faith and faith alone that deemed him righteous. Therefore He became the father of the uncircumcised. Not the physical patriarch but the spiritual patriarch for Jews and gentiles alike.
You see the Law was given to the Jews but salvation is given to all who are deemed righteous through faith.
8  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9  Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
Abraham was the father of all gentiles being saved by faith because He was saved without the circumcision made by hands.
Romans 4:10-11
But He also was the father of the Jews who are saved by faith because it was the circumcision of Abraham’s heart that saved him. It was the cutting away of all that was not of God by faith.
Being a Jew outwardly was the same as being a Christian outwardly. Talking and acting like a Christian may fool many people but being a true disciple of Jesus Christ is when all of the hypocrisy is cut away. All the sin that your flesh used to live for will become filth and you will live to be cleansed by the truth of the living Word of God. What people see will be the real you. You won’t be living a lie.
The Bible is full of references to this very thing and it uses the Word circumcision to make it very clear. Let’s look through some of these references.
Philippians 3:3
3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
We are the chosen and separated unto God by the spiritual removal of our sin.
Galatians 5:6
6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
We are separated to be Gods children through faith in Jesus Christ. We are given the sign of circumcision through the love of God that is shown to others.
Romans 2:28-29
28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
Colossians 2:11
11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
It is from the heart which all evil comes to existence through us. It is also from the heart which all of God’s goodness flows from us. They do not exist together. Salvation through faith in Jesus Christ brings the cleansing of the flesh.
1 Corinthians 7:19
19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.
Our lives are to show to whom we belong and honor.
Deuteronomy 10:16
16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.

Deuteronomy 30:6
6 And the Lord thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.
It is our Love for God through Jesus Christ that brings the cutting away of all that is not of God in our lives.
The law of the flesh commanded a fleshly circumcision which was to prove to men to whom you belonged. But the law of the spirit of love commands the removal of the flesh from the heart that God’s gracious love can and will be seen by men.
A spiritual circumcision is the cleansing by the Holy Spirit that God gives to all of us at the moment we ask Jesus into our hearts. Christ steps in and all the sin of the flesh is cut away.
If you have not asked Jesus to be in your life, now is as good a time as any. Don’t think you need to clean up your life before you ask. God already knows you are a sinner. That’s why He sent His Son to be a sacrifice for us. Even when we were dead in our trespasses He sent His Son to shed His blood on the Cross for you and I. You can’t clean up your life because it take the blood of Christ to wash away the sin in you. Ask Jesus to open your eyes to see the truth in the Word. Ask Him in all sincerity to come into your life and wash away the sin that will not leave by your hand or anyone elses.
8  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9  Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
