Romans 2:17-24  Sermon #11-31013  (RW-11120)

17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,                                                      18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;              19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,                          20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.      21 Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?                                                                              22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?                                                        23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?                              24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.

Praise the Lord!

Ephesians 2:8 (KJV)                                                                      8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Let’s begin with today’s text.
17 Behold, thou art called a Jew,
Paul is calling out the religious. Those who believe they have claim to God and heaven by birth or by ceremony or by religious works.
So as we study the living Word of God let’s apply it to our lives today.
Behold, thou art called a Christian,
The so called religious.
Those who believe they have claim to God and heaven by birth or by ceremony or even membership in a local religious organization.

Osmosis; does anyone know the meaning of the word osmosis.
osmosis - diffusion of molecules through a semi permeable membrane from a place of higher concentration to a place of lower concentration until the concentration on both sides is equal.
Years ago I remember listening to a group of people answering a questionnaire put out by a local church.
One set of questions in particular that proves the osmosis problem we have in so called Christians today.
1. What was your Grandparents and Parents faith?
2. What was their denominational affiliation?
3. What does that make you?
Just because Grandma and Grandpa were born again Christians does not mean that your Parents were.
Just because your Parents were affiliated with one particular denomination all of their lives does not make them saved or impute salvation by grace through faith to you.
Denominations don’t save anyone. Faith in Jesus Christ does!

• Just because you grew up in a household of saved people doesn’t make you saved!
• You can rub elbows with everyone in your local church and still go to HELL!
• Jesus does not rub onto someone from someone else.
• You are not a Christian by association with anyone but Christ!
• You are not a Christian because someone in your ancient lineage was.
Get a handle on this folks!
Christianity is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ!
Each and every one of us must admit we are sinners, confess our sin, and believe Christ shed His blood on our behalf that we may live life eternal with Him in Heaven.
Being around Christians is a desirable thing.
Their actions and manners can and should help others to see the truth and also help them to live better lives.
However that is still external. If those same people were taken away from that environment they would soon revert back to ungodly and unrighteous practices.
Change must be made from the inside and that only comes with a Christ filled heart. Not absorbed from your next of kin or neighbor.
Behold, thou art called a Christian,
The so called religious.
Those who believe they have claim to God and heaven by birth or by ceremony or by membership.

Not long ago I spoke with a man that believes he will go to heaven because he was baptized before he went into the service.
His parents insisted he be baptized because it is commanded of every Christian who is able.
So this man’s parents had him baptized and because of that he believes he is saved.
The ceremony of baptism has never saved anyone!
There have been so many churches split over how to baptize that it is heart breaking. Do you lean back or forward, can you be sprinkled or must you be submersed.
How about where the correct location or body of water should be; down by the river, the pond, a tank of water, swimming pool, etc.
How about the water itself?
Any special water or will creek water do?
Come on folks; get a handle on this.
There is no wrong way, place or water for baptism. That’s all on the outside.
A true baptism is in the heart. Jesus is the baptizer.
John 1:33                                                                                               33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizes with the Holy Ghost.

Baptism is when a born again Christian makes his public announcement of faith and obedience to his Lord and Savior.
At that moment he dedicates his life to Christ, dies to his old self and rises in the promise of eternal life with Christ! AMEN!
Romans 6:2-4                                                                                          2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?                                                                                               3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?                                                                4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
The ceremony of baptism is an exhibit of one’s willingness to make that public declaration of dedication.

At this point I must ask everyone if you were baptized. If you were baptized because your parents said it was the right thing to do, but you did not understand the meaning or value, please seek the face of God and then a pastor that will lead you to the correct heart condition before you go any further.
Baptism IS a serious matter. Not just something you do ceremonially to get into heaven.
Sad but true, Christians today; as in Paul’s day, put their faith in denominational practices instead of their Spiritual dependence on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
17------and rest in the law, and make thy boast of God,
Houses of worship today as in Paul’s are full of Pharisees and Sadducees but few God fearing, faithful and obedient Christians.

 Matthew 23:24-26
24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.                                            26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter that the outside of them may be clean also.

Know here is the worst part.
Behold, thou art called a Christian,
The so called religious.
Those who believe they have claim to God and heaven by birth or by ceremony.
18 And know his will, and approve the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;                                                                                    19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,                                                                                                 20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.

Generations of those who are called Christians are teaching those who are not-- to stay that way!
• Knowing Gods will-- but not conforming to it.
• Approving of a more excellent way—but not walking in it.
• Learning--- but not applying.
• Building confidence in self—but not God.
• Shining a religious light--- but not a Spiritual light.
• Teaching the weak and innocent--- but not advancing in truth and service themselves.

21 Thou therefore which teach another, teach thou not thyself? Thou that preach a man should not steal, dost thou steal?                                                                                     22 Thou that says a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? Thou that abhorred idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?
23 Thou that makes thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonours thou God?

Do we teach what we have been taught, by those who are as weak as we are?
When I was a young man I was told by some wise elder, “the Bible was written for each of us, corporately and individually.”
• Corporately is the Group study and education.
• Individual study is for the continuous Baptism of the Spirit.
It’s the washing away of the old and the filling of the new.
I’m not talking about some ecstatic experience.
I’m talking about a feeding on the truth of the Word until one grows into it.
This is what the church today is sadly missing.
Houses of worship are filled with those who listen to others but seldom open their Bibles to personally draw close to God.
• Christian’s today attempt to be Christians on the outside with little change within.
• Christian’s today are not taught the necessity of a personal relationship and a personal growth in our Lord Jesus Christ.
• Christian’s today are no different the religious scribes a Pharisees.
24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.

Matthew 23:27-28                                                                           27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.                                                                                          28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

Let’s Pray,

Our most gracious Heavenly Father, we thank You for this study in Romans. We thank You for the truth that we are to hold ourselves up to. We thank You for the light that is cast from Your Word that we may see where the pit falls and wrong turns are. Thank You for the desire You give to us to open our Bibles in private, that we may be filled with You, that we may be continuously washed inside and out. Bless this study to touch the lives of all who read it.
In the name of Jesus Christ we Pray. AMEN!
