James Sermon Series                Sermon #20  Posted 8/10/18

James 4:1-6

This Morning we will begin Chapter 4 of the Book of James.
Once again I must point out that chapter and verse were added to the Holy Scriptures for our convenience and do not necessarily delineate between topics or subjects, as in this case.
James is still reflecting on Chapter 3:14-18.
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
Stop fighting with yourself. You will never have peace if you cannot make peace with yourself.
God made you. He made you perfect. He has led you through innumerable trials and tribulations to coax you into resting on Him. And yet you struggle to be your own masters, your own teachers, and your own repair men.
Humility brings peace to you through Christ. Humility glorifies our Lord and Savior and opens the door for the Holy Spirit to start and continue helping you give evidence of His righteousness.

Our Sermon text reads:

James 4:1-6

1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Praise The Lord!
James begins Chapter 4  by giving examples to BRETHREN who are struggling in their lives because they are living outside of the Word of God.
Remember James has never stopped talking to the Brethren who are scattered abroad. James 1:1
So in Chapter 4, he begins with a series of questions that he has already given the answers to.
Verse 1 Where do wars and fights come from among you?
Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that
war in your members?---- Answer? ----YES!
Verse 14 chapter 3----bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts,---
Verse 2 chapter 4
2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.    Why?---because; verse15, chapter 3
15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is
earthly, sensual, demonic.

Verse 3 chapter 4
3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
Why is this so? Verse16, chapter 3
16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.

4 Adulterers and adulteresses,-----
Oh what a poignant statement he makes here!
Is he saying to the Brethren--- Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. (ref, Rev 2:4)

Brothers and Sisters have you left Jesus Christ?
Or have you ever really committed yourself to Him?
You may have viewed Him on the Cross but not kept that image at the forefront of your thoughts.
You may have had sorrow in your heart, but true repentance was not with you.
You may have confessed to being the reason He was crucified but you have never truly forsaken the evil that rules your life.
You may have chosen a softer gentler message of salvation.
One that allows for continuous behavior that is a mixture of right and not so right.
You may have chosen religion over a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior through His Word.
You may have neglected to fully humble yourself to remain at the cross until you are called to our Father’s side with our Lord Jesus Christ!

4 Adulterers and adulteresses!
Adultery is a promise not kept.
Adultery is the result of a lie spoken from an unfaithful heart.
Adultery is replacing the one you have chosen for life with anything other than a total commitment in love.
James is using this word to compare insincerity among men and women, to insincerity with Jesus Christ.
You see-- there is no difference.
Matthew Henry says it is easy for us to assume that we would be unlike the scribes and Pharisees and follow Jesus willingly. Yet even centuries later, he writes, “Christ in his Spirit, in His Word, in His ministers, and in His followers, is still not treated better.” Are we quick to follow the Lord as He presents Himself today through the preaching of the Word?
We have no right to think ourselves any better than Pharisees if we are not quick to obey His Word each and every day.

There is no sincere commitment in your love for Christ if you do not obey the Word of God as it is written for us to obey!
Modern religion modifies the cut and dried, black and white meanings of God’s will in His Word. Men will always try to change things to meet their wants and needs. All they need is a few people to convince and agree with them and it becomes the truth for them. But God does not change His word for our comfort and laziness. He strengthens us to fulfill His will by His Word for His glory.
John 14:23-24
23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

If you come to the Cross confessing and repenting your sins; and remain at the cross to live out your eternal life in the love of His Mercy and the power of His Grace you will fulfill your vow of sincere commitment in Love with your Savior Jesus Christ!

But, If the Cross is only a once for a short time event to you, then you are an adulterer.
At the cross is where the Blood covenant was made.
At the cross is where we enter into that covenant for life.
And at the Cross is where we as true brothers and sisters in Christ, shall remain until He comes for us or we are called to Him!
You see, the Cross was Gods Highest expression of Love for us.
John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Now think to yourself. What brought you to the Cross?
Was it the truth of the Word of God in His Holy Bible?
Did you bring that truthful Word with you to the Cross?
If it was the truth of the Word that brought you to Life eternal then why do we not remain in the Word through Life eternal?

Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
You become:  4 Adulterers and adulteresses,----
Anything that draws you away from the Word of God, Jesus Himself;
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 1:14
Anything that takes your attention from the One that died for you is enmity with God.

The first commandment is; “You shall have no other gods before Me.                                                                                                    No means “No”, and before means “in front of or instead of.”
gods –small g—is anything you set in front of or instead of Jesus Christ.
Nothing less than God first in all you say, think and do will suffice.
Read His Word, Pray His Word, Do His Word; anything less proves your insincerity for Life eternal with Christ!
Some may think this is a hard line to draw.
Kind of a do or die message. Well guess what folks –IT IS!
One Life has been freely given on the cross to draw that line.
Now how about you?
Which side of that line will you live on?
Which side will you die on?
Are you on both sides? Do not boast and lie against the truth.
You cannot live on both sides of the line clearly drawn in the Scriptures!
5 Do ye think that the Scripture sayeth in vain, The Spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
This is God Himself, He is a jealous God.
He wants you to Himself, not to be shared with the world.
He made you, why should He not want you to Himself!
All of you!
6 But He giveth more grace. ----
Though we look away, though we turn from His path, though we stumble and fall, He gives more grace. He gives us everything we need to remain in His righteousness; to look the right way and walk the right way, and stand and wait for Him the right way.
“God resisteth the proud, But giveth grace unto the humble.”

Let’s Pray;
Our Most Gracious Heavenly Father, we praise you Lord for the truth in Your Word that continues to wipe away all the that is not of You; all the lies, all the false teachings and false religions.
We pray Lord that each one of us will grasp the Knowledge in your Word and apply it to our lives daily. Being religious, claiming religion, believing a religion will always leave us short of true salvation. Faith in Your Son Jesus Christ is the beginning of a personal relationship forever with Him and You. And a true relationship with Christ will always bring a continuous growth in love and obedience. Guide, Guard, and Protect us as we go forth in the name of Jesus Christ.
