Ephesians Sermon Series                                          Ephesians 2:1-7                          Sermon #5  Posted 5/20/20

Eph 2:1-7  But God!

1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;                                                                      2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:                                                                                3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.                                                                  4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,                                                                  5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)                      6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:                          7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
This is our 5th sermon in Ephesians and we are beginning today in chapter 2 which in no way is separated from chapter 1. Remember chapter and verse numbering was added for our convenience and was never in the original letters and texts.
As we studied Chapter 1 and followed what Paul was preaching we were realizing God’s awesome plan of redemption for us, and what comes with that plan and whom it is through and whom it is to and where we are in Him who fills all in all!
It is one powerful statement after another; overlapping to build a staircase of truth that can only lead a born again Christian to press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
So, now that you are being lifted to a new level of faith and obedience. Consecrating yourselves, setting your faces like flint in the righteousness of God. Paul wants each and every one of us to never forget who we were and where we were without Jesus Christ. Our past position was eternal damnation. Our past judgment was eternal death, our past location was hell.
Hell is best defined as eternal separation from God.          No light, no peace, no love, no rest!  No God!
       You see Paul in his sermon to the Ephesians is making sure they and we in extension understand the totality of what we have in Christ. And the best way to do that is to stay mindful of who you were and where you were without Him. And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
So after such a long introduction for today’s sermon; this is where we begin. Built up, consecrated, filled, ready to move forward, and wham! Back to who you were.--------- Why?
I’m here to tell you,                                                                                           That only those that flee a burning building can look back in fear and trembling with thanksgiving, truly realizing there present position in life and safety.
We were all dead in our sins and trespasses, everyone one of us who are saved.  And this is who Paul is talking to in his letter. It’s the saved, the believers, the church in Ephesus.
But it is also for the benefit of the unsaved; those who are still in the burning building, those who can still hear the voice of one calling them to safety, those who still can reach out for salvation.
He is preaching the church’s testimony.
We all have the same testimony. Oh we come from different families, different teachings, and different circumstances but if you lump sum everything; we were all dead in our sins and trespasses. One sin or many, one trespass or many, makes no difference. Dead is dead.
You need only stay in a burning building once until you can’t get out. You need only stay in your sins and trespasses until it’s too late.
I need you to see that there is a difference between trespasses and sins. To sin means to miss the mark.                It means that ALL we Say, Think and Do is to glorify God or else we sin. Trespasses are things we say and or do that is Ungodly;---- but sin includes our thoughts. Not to say trespasses are not sin. Trespasses or the actions that come from allowing sinful thoughts rule in you.
Matthew 15:19
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

Out of the Heart which is the center of man, the heart sets itself to do right or wrong.--- “Oh I had my heart set on it, so I did it my way!” The heart makes the decision, the mind plans the action, then the body carries it out.
Trespasses are the action. The speaking or the doing. Trespasses can be against you even if you don’t know any better. If someone never hears the true Gospel are they condemned to Hell? Yes.
I’ll let you think about that for a bit.
The Bible says we are all born into sin.                                    Romans 3:23
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Romans 5:12
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Those who never hear the true Gospel are as we were; they are in that burning house, and if they can’t or don’t hear the voice that will lead them to safety they will perish.

Sheds light on our responsibility as evangelists doesn’t it.
Paul makes it clear that we are to look back at the burning house and rejoice in our salvation but also to know there are still many in that same house.
They are still in our previous condition, our previous position, our previous relationship. Listen again to Paul:
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;                                                                                          2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
-----even as others.                                                                                   Who are the Others? The unsaved, those still in the Burning House. Just as the others we were dead; we walked in our sins and trespasses. That means we continued on our way. What way was that? The way of the prince of the power of the air. Satan works in the ungodly. Satan made his lies so real, made himself so beautiful, made his voice so loud and constant that we had little desire to look at or listen to anything else. And we were happy to do so!  Proud to be what and who and where we were, just as the others.
1 John 2:16   16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Yes; Proud to stay in our own little burning houses!
4 But God, 4 But God,-- I’m believing those two words hold the keys to the heavenly places for the believer.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,                                                                  5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)                                       Remember who we were, where we were and whom we served. We desired nothing from a Perfectly Sinless Holy God. We were dead in our sins and trespasses. Just as Adam and Eve we ran from the presence of God. Knowing our sins but ran with them instead of away from them.     4 But God, Not us, 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, this is the exceeding abundance of God and His mercy. Just as God always was and is and always will be. So is His exceedingly abundant mercy. It never ends. It’s new every day. It continues forever.

Psalm 23:6
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Psalm 86:5
5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
Without God’s Mercy upon our retched sin filled souls we were damned to hell; with no escape. The House that we are born into was on fire and there is nothing we could do to escape.

4 But God, and only God, in His abundant mercy, made a way for us to flee the realm of total destruction, flee the condition of eternal damnation, flee the director of all that sets itself up against the knowledge of God.     Why?
for his great love wherewith he loved us,                                        John 3:16-21 says?
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.                                                17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.      18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.          19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.                                                    20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.          21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Even when we were dead in sins, God gave everything for us and to us.
And hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)                                                                                                 We are not just alive, we have a new life to live. We are saved from eternal damnation, eternal punishment, eternal separation from God! We are made alive with Christ!
We are the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
(by grace you have been saved),  by God’s unmerited favor. We deserved nothing. 4 But God, Made a way for us to escape the burning house, called out to us in the voice of truth that only the heart can hear and gave us direction for salvation. And then blesses us for showing the world what He and only He has done for us. Read John 3:21 again:

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
And in our text for today----------- verse 7  That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.4 But God,  4 But God,
God did it all, It’s God’s plan of redemption for all who will hear and respond. It’s God path to salvation from eternal damnation. The body returns to the earth but the soul, the spirit, the very life that God breathed into us through Adam goes on forever.
Ezekiel 18:4
4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
Jude 1:7  says:
suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
There are 3 things that we must draw from today’s sermon before we close.
1. If you are saved, never forget, where you are in Christ. Praise God for His abundant, never ending Mercy and unmerited favor upon you, for (by grace you have been saved),
2. If you are saved, look back with fear and trembling and show the others the same love that God has shown to us. Call out to the unsaved in the voice that God has given to all of us who are in Christ. The voice of Truth. The only voice that can lead to faith in Christ.  The Gospel messege. The only path to salvation. Romans 10:17
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
3. If you are here today and know you are not saved. There is always room at the foot of the cross. You’ve already heard the voice of the Holy Spirit calling you out of darkness, out of your burning house, out of eternal fire or you wouldn’t be here to listen to (or read) this sermon. Answer the call. The best time is always now. There may not be a later.
It’s as simple as the ABC’s                                                          A.                                                                                                        Admit that you are a sinner and there is nothing you can do yourself to be saved .                                                                B.                                                                                                        Believe in your Heart that God Loved you so much that He gave is only begotten Son to die for you. That He took the punishment of death and separation from God in your place. Believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead and He is now at the right Hand of God interceding for us and you will be saved.                                                      C.                                                                                                        Commit yourself to Jesus.                                                            Confess that He is Lord in your life.                                        Consecrate yourself to Him and only Him.

Let’s Pray,                                                                                     Heavenly Father,                                                                          Thank You for your word of truth that shines so bright against the darkness of the world. Thank you for the words that called us from the destruction and eternal damnation that we are all born into. Thank You for Jesus, our life and eternal salvation. We praise you for the good work that you have begun in us when we answered your upward call in Christ Jesus. Be with us this week as we study your word that we may be ready to call out to those who are still in there burning houses. Those who don’t know there condition and position without Christ. Those whom you have prepared to hear with their hearts. Guide, Guard and Protect us. In Jesus name we Pray, AMEN.
